Bad Left Hook Live Results and Coverage: Sebastian Zbik vs Julio Cesar Chavez Jr
With his legendary father set to enter the International Boxing Hall of Fame next weekend, the spotlight is on Julio Cesar Chavez Jr tonight, as the mega-popular young fighter targets his first major title, facing Sebastian Zbik on HBO Boxing After Dark.
The show starts at 10 p.m. EDT. The co-feature has exciting featherweight prospect Mikey Garcia (25-0, 21 KO) taking on short-notice opponent Rafael Guzman (28-2, 20 KO) in a 10-round bout, and we probably won't be switched off from the Showtime card in time to do round-by-round updates for that fight.
But we will be here for the main event, as 25-year-old Chavez (42-0-1, 30 KO) makes his first appearance on HBO and looks to lift the WBC middleweight title from Zbik (30-0, 10 KO). Chavez is the moderate betting favorite for the fight, and has Freddie Roach in his corner, but he's struggled against lesser fighters in the past and naysayers have been predicting his imminent downfall for a few years now. Will tonight be the night he meets more than he can handle, or will the son take another step forward?
Join us tonight for live discussion and round-by-round coverage.

Zbik-Chavez R1

Chavez weighed 180 today. Zbik 165. 180???
Chavez targeting the body with wide hooks. Nice 1-2 by Zbik, and he hammers with the right. Zbik looks much faster of hand than Chavez. Chavez going to that body. Both leaning on each other in close, nobody holding. Nice combo by Zbik, head and body. Chavez with a right, then an uppercut in close. Hook to the body again. Nice shots from Zbik, but Chavez backs him down in return. Fun first round here — I’ll watch Jr fight all the time if it’s like this more often.

Zbik-Chavez R2

Zbik working that jab, popping Chavez every time he comes toward him. Nice hook to the body by Chavez. That’s been his best punch so far, and could pay off later. Chavez being backed down to the corner. Zbik coming right to him now, and RIPS Chavez with two shots upstairs. Chavez goes a little low with a body shot, referee gives him a second but doesn’t make a big issues. Chavez to the body again. Zbik comes back with a nice series. Both guys mixing it up, now Chavez turning up the heat a little. Zbik misses a right upstairs, but just barely.

Julio looks quite good offensively, but Zbik can hit him at ease. If he keeps catching him flush, I wouldn’t be that surprised if Zbik can really hurt him.

Zbik-Chavez R3

Hook to the body by Chavez. Roy repeating himself over and over. Slipping into Lennox territory. Zbik backs Chavez down with a combo. Zbik with another clean shot. I’ve never thought a ton of Zbik, but he’s tooling Chavez. This isn’t close. Chavez has the hook to the body. That’s about it. Nice combo by Zbik, Chavez showboats and fires back. Hits Zbik’s gloves a lot. Uppercut by Zbik. Another nice combo by Zbik rattles Chavez’s head around. Chavez goes to the body a little to end the round.

“Zbik is definitely trying to win this fight.” – Roy Jones Jr
Zbik whomps him with a right. Boy, for real. This fight is not close. Zbik is way outclassing Chavez so far. Chavez may be able to get to him with power as this wears on, and the body work might add up sometime, but he also needs more of it, and he needs to get up on Zbik. He cannot box this guy.

I think he’s probably pretty good at his style. He can’t hit for shit – but he’s efficient, scores points and throws combos well. He’s solid. I’d say a bottom of the top 10 – like a 8 or 9 kind of guy.

Zbik-Chavez R5

This is kind of like watching whack-a-mole. Chavez sticks his face out there and Zbik pops him. Zbik is just dominating this fight. This might be the first and last HBO main event for Jr, because you can only get so much out of “he’s popular” before it looks like you’re just showcasing a bad fighter. I mean maybe he comes back here. He might. It could happen. But he’s getting beaten badly. Zbik does take a clean right that wobbles him giong back to the corner. Don’t think it’ll make a huge difference.

Chavez actually starting to cover up defensively better as the fight goes on. He’s made some decent adjustments here, which is the Freddie Roach difference for him, I figure. Can we please have this end the amazingness of Roach talk
Pacman, he legit improved. Khan he legit improved, but mostly it appears that he improved due to being at 140 and age causing his chin to improve – I don’t know of any way to train chin. Cause lets be honest, the old Kahn is knocked out by those shots by Maidana.
JCC Jr was exposed today (inevitably), Martrosian still hasn’t beaten much (saul roman doesn’t count).

Can we stop praising Chavez’s “body attack”? Most of the time it was just flailing at his midsection.
Yeah, well. It was a sucker’s bet to take Zbik. Chavez draws the flies. Welcome to the dark side of boxing.

I don’t agree, but it’s not totally crazy. Congrats to JCC, Jr.

116-112 is out there
But 115-113 Chavez is still reasonable IMO. I have Zbik one close round that easily could have swung to Chavez. At least to me, Chavez just seemed to consistently be doing more damage. This fight did veryu little to upgrade my opinion of him though.

Indeed
TR will stick him in there with Cotto. They’ll force the issue. And if Cotto won’t because of size, they’ll feed him to Sergio before they’ll let him fight a no-name who so obviously is a horrible style matchup for him, and probably more talented too.

Chavez is going to take this belt…and run, and, run, and run.

The Spanish broadcast doesn’t mention Zbik’s name very often. I’m not sure they actually know it.

It’s no surprise. I feel no outrage. I feel a certain numbness which may be indifference to me watching the 15th or so best middleweight get a raw deal against the 24th best. I said before I couldn’t recall an HBO main event with two fighters I thought less of. I pretty much stand by that.

Well,this is a Lose-Lose for Universum
first Braehmer backs out of the Clev fight and then gets stripped and then this happens, they have no champions now.
congratulation i love you

Zbik DOESN’T have a great defense and ISN’T a great fighter and neither is papi’s darling here. Very sad.

Zbik is an awfully nice guy.

Zbik is giving the most honest, brutally sad post-fight interview I’ve ever heard. His reaction is basically what mine is, except he just got hit for 12 rounds and it actually matters to him.

well, we all knew he would get jibbed… he knew it too
Bob Arum would promote Lucifer himself if he could put asses in the seats.
thats why the lines were what they were at vegas. I collected on this fight despite thinking that Chavez lost much like I collected on the Alexander-Kotelnik fight. USA is the new Germany

Zbik's about as gracious on the mike as any fighter I've ever heard immediately after losing a close one in a hometown decision

To be honest
I thought that was a coin flip fight. Well done to Jr. A lot of people – me included- didnt think he would even get this far. I also always enjoy his fights
Classy Chavez fans booing Zbik for not faling over dead before the little prince.

It's rare for me to look forward to a fighter being outclassed.
After all, it’s not Chavez’s fault that he’s a pawn in the game. But still, if he gets anywhere near the names that are being thrown out there…

Man that interview made me sad
Everything Zbik said was on the money. This fight was hardly a robbery, but man this still sucks
Also this backfired on me with Duddy
but I would love this fight for either Macklin or Lee
probably trying to make their end scores seem less stupido

Arthur Abraham is still a serious man
He lost to some damn good fighters. It would be a huge ask of Jr
Does Max Kellerman seem like he’s eaten more nonsense tonight than he can stomach, and he’s about to throw up? Or is that just me?
Bad Left Hook
"To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day..."
it males a nice change
Usually I’m close to hurling after hearing Kellerman’s garbage
This might be the first time ever I 100% agree with Kellerman
And feel like he’s saying exactly what needs to be said.

obviously you've never had the opportunity
to feel like Michael after Thriller came out.
I'm glad he specified a time period
where he wanted to feel like Jackson, or else we might’ve had to call in Chris Hansen.

Akward....
Roy interview. You are not Bernard dude!!!! No no need for film are you nuts?! stop fighting!!!
Is Roy Jones high?
He’s taken too many punches or something. That was gibberish.

Watching these two mediocre guys squabble over a belt was a little sad tonight. Listening to grown men dignify it was sadder.

I got a bad feeling about Canelo-Rhodes
Something tells me Rhodes will get the shaft worse in that fight than Zbik got in this one.
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
I'm prepared for it.
I’ve tempered my excitement quite a bit because I’m fairly positive he’s gonna get shafted
Rhodes is no joke, and unlike Zbik has a punch. Call me a drunken loon if you will, but I saw Canelo hurt by Cotto (the other one).

thats in mexico
not the us….. maybe that will help… but i doubt it
Also, that will be a higher level fight, so the boxing itself should be better

They couldn't find a single iota of video on Rhodes for the promo?
He’s only had like 15 televised fights in the UK

With as many fights as they both carry
Why the heck wouldn’t Sky give HBO the right to use if if they ask?

Earlier I was watching highlights of Roy from about 10 years ago.
I am now depressed at the effects of time and being thumped in the head.
Roy
is going to forget a lot of stuff if he keeps fighting…
Yeah…probably too late, based on how he talks. Man, that bums me out.
