Purse Report for Zbik vs Chavez Jr Card

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr made $600,000 for Saturday's fight. (Photo by Jeff Gross/Getty Images)

ESPN.com's Dan Rafael posted the purses for tonight's Sebastian Zbik vs Julio Cesar Chavez Jr card at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Here's what the lot pulled in:

Sebastian Zbik $292.5K Julio Cesar Chavez Jr $600K
Mikey Garcia $110K Rafael Guzman $20K
Vanes Martirosyan $50K Saul Roman $12.5K
Christy Martin $25K Dakota Stone $3.5K

About as expected for everyone. Chavez is already paid quite well, but is well on his way to being a really serious money player, for at least a few fights. Eventually he'll have to take what probably amounts to an unwinnable fight, but they'll do that the smart way, too, and get major money out of it.  If they can get that fight with Miguel Cotto this September, Top Rank is in basically a no-lose business situation. Everyone will make good money, the fight will sell, and they come out of it either with Chavez knocking off a well-known, very popular fighter, or young Chavez loses to the veteran and they are able to say, "He lost to a great fighter, so what?"

The loser is Dakota Stone.
She’s ugly….and still poor.

Zbik is the clear winner.
Nice work for a powerless paper champion.

Harsh

Not a bad payday for a 9-8 womans fighter probably. I’m sure she’ll be able to milk this year into a career as well.

And wow did Martin’s hand look awful. Can’t blame her at all for stopping there. Her hand looked like it was literally snapped in half.

That paper champ at least is a better boxer than the new paper champ, for what so little that might mean.

if they fight heavy enough

i think chavez could stand a chance against coto.. hes gonna get hit a lot but i dont think cotos power is carrying up… that seems like the obvious next fight for both guys tho

It might be competitive

Simply ecause Cotto is faded and belongs at 160 about as much as Timothy Bradley does, but it’s still not a fight I’m looking forward to. Cotto’s been a great fighter and is a future hall of famed in my opinion, but this just seems like an ultra cheap way of getting him a title in a fourth weight class.

Didn’t he fight against Calderon in the amateur ranks? Just to show that Cotto doesn’t exactly have a large frame and asking him (a small WW) to go up to MW is stupid/absurd.

A further bonus of the Cotto-Chavez fight is that if the former wins, they can make a catchweight rematch with Pacquiao for a ninth division title.

Indeed. I actually don’t mind Bradley making 7 figures for good fights — or at least fights with risk.
