Rumor: Mayweather Guaranteed $40 Million for Ortiz Fight

How much will Money Mayweather pull in for his September return to the ring? (Photo by Ethan Miller/Getty Images)

The rumor going around right now is that Floyd Mayweather Jr has been guaranteed $40 million for his September 17 fight with Victor Ortiz, which is an incredibly large figure, and twice what Manny Pacquiao was guaranteed in May against Shane Mosley.

Mayweather (41-0, 25 KO) will have been out of the ring for 16½ months by the time he fights Ortiz (29-2-2, 22 KO). The 24-year-old Mexican-American has never headlined a fight of this magnitude, but Mayweather has, and if this rumor is even close to accurate, they're obviously counting on Floyd's return to the ring being a major event that sells a lot of pay-per-views.

How much can this fight really sell, though? Now we're just talking about a rumor here, but let's say it's $40 mil for Floyd. Is Ortiz taking a relatively low payday? Do they think this can sell more than the standard major PPV, that is to say somewhere between one and 1.5 million?

No matter what there's no way Floyd isn't going to pull in some serious bank here, at least a $20 million guarantee. But $40 is wild.

If this is true, he’ll never fight Pac for less than the $100 mil he was rumored to be asking for.

Iole was a little over the top

But he was pretty firm at saying that 1.5 million was the minimum that this fight could possibly pull. I think 1.5 mil is going to be a pretty close to the actual PPV number.

Does Ortiz get anywhere close to the $5 million figure that JMM is guaranteed?

by DodgerFan86 on Jun 8, 2011 3:45 AM EDT reply actions

If he does it will probably be at least 5 times more than he’s ever earned for a fight.
I can see Floyd getting a massive amount, because i think it could well get 1.5 m buys, and Ortiz will likely be getting a smaller cut than most of FM’s previous opponnents, but he’ll still be happy, imo.

I thought I saw a reporter tweet that he was only guaranteed $3.5, but I can only seem to find unverified message board links at the moment.

I’m sure our BLH legal eagles have a better, clearer take om this, but on the surface this “guarantee” seems a little unlikely to me, even with Mayweather Promotions co-promoting. There has got to be several HBO loopholes and escape hatches here, right Brick/lcollins1?

Only way this could possibly be conceivable is if HBO have given huge backing for this fight.

I mean, if HBO is desperate to put on a massive PPV before the end of the year without seeing SHO take the two biggest, it’s surely plausible that they could have subsidised a large portion of Floyd’s paycheck, right?

Also, if this gets the right promotion, it could be a massive PPV. It’s De La Hoya clone appealing to Mexico and all the Mexican-Americans, fighting against “I Beat De La Hoya” Mayweather who already draws at least a million. I really, really think this could be the biggest of the lot out of the big Pacquiao and Mayweather draws of the last few years.

This is my second Rocky III reference in as many minutes but...

It would amazing for Oscar Delahoya to take over training Victor Ortiz to beat Floyd Mayweather Jr. a la, Apollo Creed helping Rocky because he couldn’t do it anymore.

In seriousness, though, Ortiz needs some extra help to actually win. The writing is on the wall for him right now, to be competitive on the way to clearly losing.

I hope that A) I hope he has the same determination to walk through fire that he had against Berto B) Considering that he has four months to train, I hope he gives himself two camps with behind closed doors, 12 round fights with a sparring partner like Sugar Ray Leonard did going into his fight with Hagler.C) I hope Mayweather doesn’t get sentenced to jail and can’t proceed.

I hope he gets his boring ass beat!

For some reason, I really really REALLY never enjoy 2 Goldenboy fighters fighting each other, sans Marquez Diaz 1. Something always seems fishy when Douchweather fights. Just my .02

Is it safe to say that Ortiz has only the infamous “puncher’s chance” in this one?

by Ar Ef on Jun 8, 2011 8:44 AM EDT reply actions

Well, i certainly can’t see him outboxing Floyd.
But he’s strong at the weight and young, so he could pose him some problems, especially in the early rds, imo.

by Matt Mosley on Jun 8, 2011 8:52 AM EDT up reply actions

Plus

Floyd’s coming off a long layoff. Considering that, Ortiz is a very respectable opponent to come back against, imo.

by Matt Mosley on Jun 8, 2011 8:53 AM EDT up reply actions

I think one of the best things Ortiz has going for him is the fact he’s a southpaw……………Mayweather has had some difficulties with SP’s (Corley, Zab) in the past.

Either way………….I haven’t missed Mayweather for one nanosecond.

by DPlainview on Jun 8, 2011 9:37 AM EDT up reply actions

Good point

about the lefties.
I’d forgotten Ortiz was one to be honest, so yeah, that’s another point in his favour.
Glad Floyd’s back? As far as having to hear him spout his crap, no not really.
But i’ve always liked watching him as a boxer, ever since i first saw him against Emmanuel Burton (Augustus).
He could really punch back in them days too. Really solid hitter.

by Matt Mosley on Jun 8, 2011 9:43 AM EDT up reply actions

Not that he still can’t. But with the hand injuries, he maybe holds back a little bit.

by Matt Mosley on Jun 8, 2011 9:45 AM EDT up reply actions

He has two knockouts in six fights at 147, one via late check-hook against a junior welterweight (Hatton), one against Shamba Mitchell. It’s not just the hand injuries, it’s the size too, not that there’s any shame in that.

by El Destruyo on Jun 8, 2011 11:09 AM EDT up reply actions

No wonder the guy only fights every once in a while--

Or when the IRS moves him to do so.

The Ortiz deficiencies that should = a Jr. win (if time and time off have not taken a toll) have been well laid out by others.

But this is a smart fight for Floyd as right now Ortiz is perceived as being dangerous—
And who knows, maybe he’ll turn out to be, but in the end perception is the big stick—

And Floyd has outsmarted Manny in the perception game this time around, IMO.

by Don From Prov on Jun 8, 2011 8:53 AM EDT reply actions

Yeah and he can also brag down the line if Manny fights Ortiz in the future that “Manny’s only fighting his leftovers”.

Why dont we ever see the headline "Psychic
wins lottery" in the newspapers?

by sick frank on Jun 8, 2011 8:57 AM EDT up reply actions

I seem to remember quite a few people suggesting Ortiz would be a good opponent for Manny if the GBP – Top Rank feud was resolved.
Now Floyd’s fighting him, some seem to be discredting Ortiz’ worth.
It just makes me wonder if you would say the same about Manny.
I tend to think his fans would be making Ortiz out to be King Kong.

by Matt Mosley on Jun 8, 2011 9:01 AM EDT reply actions

As i said above, after 16 months out, Ortiz will be a perfectly respestable opponent for Floyd to come back to.

by Matt Mosley on Jun 8, 2011 9:02 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree that Ortiz is a perfectly respectable opponent but imo Ortiz’s style is perfectly fit for Floyd. Just like Pac-Hatton who looked very good on paper but turned out to be a perffect fight style-wise for Manny.

by sick frank on Jun 8, 2011 9:15 AM EDT up reply actions

That sounds about right to me.
I just don’t think Floyd deserves criticism for making this fight.
J M Marquez, most definitely, even Hatton, cos he was not a welterweight. But Ortiz has shown he is more effective at the higher weight.
There aren’t many who can hang with Mayweather.

by Matt Mosley on Jun 8, 2011 9:19 AM EDT up reply actions

Ortiz

showed a lot of heart in his last fight, after being knocked down, so i think he could possibly see the full 12 rounds through.
Mayweather punches harder than some give him credit for, but it’s really his accuracy and timing that make him dangerous offensively.

by Matt Mosley on Jun 8, 2011 9:23 AM EDT up reply actions

Agreed.

Ortiz is a far better opponent than shot Mosley and old, fat Marquez. He’s probably also better than shot Margarito and Clottey.

It might sound unimportant to some

but Sky annoy me at times with their misinformed unprofessionalism when it comes to boxing.
Skytext is stating that “Mayweather will be challenging Ortiz for his WBC Welterweight title”, they then go on to say that this contest “will take place at 160lbs” and will be the highest weight Floyd has fought at since he fought DLH at 154.
Morons.

by Matt Mosley on Jun 8, 2011 10:22 AM EDT up reply actions

Whichever incompetent wrote that obviously doesn’t even know boxing weights.
I just can’t stand when they let someone who doesn’t know anything about the sport do a write up on it.
What kind of freaking boxing reporter thinks welterweight is 160lbs????
They are even claiming it will be a title shot in “a sixth different weight class”.
I hate these people, misleading casual fans.

by Matt Mosley on Jun 8, 2011 10:29 AM EDT up reply actions

They might be thinking of mma weight classes. I don’t follow mma but I seem to have read somewhere that welter there is 160? But yeah that’s irresponsible journalism. Yahoo sports is just as bad.

by erasedcitizen on Jun 8, 2011 10:43 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I think welter’s 170 in MMA. Not certain though.

Yeah, MMA welter is 170lbs.

by Matt Mosley on Jun 8, 2011 11:01 AM EDT up reply actions

That's embarrassing.

I hadn’t seen that but sheesh. They are very unprofessional with the boxing coverage though, you’re right. The schedule on the main Sky page is never updated, so Matt Macklin’s currently listed as fighting on 2 July, when the Sturm bout is actually 25 June.

I did suggest that post-Berto Ortiz was a good opponent for Manny

And he is a good opponent for Floyd, too

Again, get the guy while he’s hot and people are blowing him up to (a slight semblance of) King Kong
The Ortiz positives and negative will/would be there against either man—

I’m saying that he is a better fight perception-wise than a blown up JMM who’s already been spanked by Jr.
Stupid, uncreative, unenlightened, and overly safe thinking on the part of team-Manny in this case, at least in my opinion

I just feel that a lot of folks don’t consider what fights at least appear to enhance a fighter’s legacy the most

40 mil?

I’ll believe it when it’s been confirmed.

For anyone looking for an Ortiz win, you can get some pretty sweet odds.
I was expecting it to be a bit closer than this:

Idea for the undercard

I think for the undercard to this fight it would be nice if we could watch Marcos Maidana beat the Hell out of Lamont Peterson just demonstrate how very little Victor Ortiz deserves to be where he is.
