Boxing Breakfast: Luis Collazo Signs With Golden Boy, Erik Morales Targeting Guerrero or Vazquez
Luis Collazo Back, Signed by Golden Boy
Former welterweight contender Luis Collazo has signed a deal with Golden Boy Promotions, looking to get his career active once again. Collazo (31-4, 16 KO) has one of the weirdest records out there, as it's kind of empty for quality wins, but he's been very competitive in "good" losses to Ricky Hatton and Andre Berto. He hurt his hand early in his loss to Shane Mosley, and his other loss was an early career TKO to Edwin Cassiani. He simply has not fought enough since his controversial 2006 loss to Hatton, had issues with ex-promoter Don King, and returned this April fighting on a Dmitriy Salita card in New York, his first fight in 22 months. Hopefully this gets Collazo back in the game, because he can give a lot of guys problems. He's still only 30 and hasn't taken a lot of punishment.
Erik Morales Wants Another Title Still
With his July 30 HBO PPV fight scrapped, Erik Morales is hoping to land the August 6 fight on Boxing After Dark against Robert Guerrero, or maybe a fight with lightweight titlist Miguel Vazquez. I think both are rotten matchups for Morales, who showed a lot of grit and resolve in April against Marcos Maidana, but we're talking about Guerrero, who is more an all-around talent than Maidana, and Vazquez, who has the spoiler ability to really cut down the faded Morales. But Morales is Morales, and he wants tough fights. It's to be expected.
Miranda vs Despaigne for 7/29 FNF
With Juan Diaz out, the July 29 Friday Night Fights now appears to be Edison Miranda vs Yordanis Despaigne. It's an OK fight, I guess, but that's me giving Miranda (34-5, 29 KO) the credit others give him. Personally I have little regard for Miranda, but hey. Joel Casamayor vs Jorge Luis Teron is also still on for the same show at Vegas' Cosmopolitan resort.

Good call
it should, cos the first one was a very good fight, but i would be suprised if it happened anytime soon. I don’t think Berto would want it.
Besides, i think Collazo has moved up to 154 now.
Long time ago--early 90s
I heard just in time that he was playing an extra night’s Sunday early evening performance across town. I had been quite ill with stomach flu but I was afraid I’d never get another chance to see him live and took cabs both was. It was beyond hot that late summer Sunday night (temps in the 100s and humid), and the AC at the venue failed. The heat kept people in, so there were only about 50-60 people, a lot of singles, siblings and cousins, a group of 5-6 sisters in their 50s from uptown who danced fabulously in the aisle at intervals, people who’d wanted to come enough to come out and stay there in that awful, awful heat. He was backed up by the Blue Notes; they performed in that heat under lights for 60 people as if the President and all of Congress were there, and did a receiving line across the front of the stage when the show was over. Best Manhattan hot summer afternoon I ever had.

I like the fact Erik is trying to get that 4th title..
There are no easy match-ups for Erik, so why not try and become the first Mexican fighter to win four titles.
If he is determined to carry on figthing, i would prefer he goes for the 4th divisional title at lightweight.
At least it’s closer to his natural weight. He may have almost got by Maidana at 140 but MM is so crude that Erik almost did it on talent alone.
I don’t think he would do as well against some of the bigger guys who also have talent.
It would not suprise me if he got the job done at 135, unless the Maidana fight was more a one off than a resurgence.
Does anyone else see Despaigne outboxing Miranda to a decision?
Miranda I feel takes a little more crap than he deserves. He did beat Allan Green fair and square, and he destroyed Francisco Sierra who is turning out to be pretty decent and beat David Banks pretty thoroughly who is a high end gatekeeper. Each of his losses has come to an elite fighter. He’s one-dimensional and can be beaten by following the playbook, but he’s also not crap. If he was still at 168, there would be an argument that he could be top 10 there still. I’m not sure I’d favor Robert Stieglitz to beat him.
Despaigne is pretty decent though. Old for a ‘prospect’, and I understand why his team is taking this fight. But I also think Sillakh beating him with ease is more of a testament to Sillakh’s talent than it is an indictment of Despaigne’s.

I’m not sure he takes the crap from many more people than me, honestly.

On Collazo
Anyone else this may be setting up Canelo-Collazo? That would be a really solid step up for Alvarez, and depending on how he handles Rhodes, I think Collazo would be considered a very live dog. Plus then you get the Mexico-PR rivalry.

I thought Collazo was Brooklyn tho. I know his parents are from Puerto Rico.

I think he was born in Brooklyn, but they'd still play up the angle

Im very glad one of my favorite fighters, Collazo is back, and he would give “Canelo” a boxing lesson. Like in the Berto fight he would just use his superior technique, angles, and punch volume to win. Although it would not be fair to throw him to the wolves just yet, since his last two fights was 8 round club fights against David Gogichaishvili and some 13-8 opponent.

Too bad that GBP can't do better for Morales
He has no chance vs Guerrero and my man Vazquez will never allow him to look good. Get him in there with someone he can counter punch off his old legs and he’ll look fine.
I saw Edison Miranda fight this weekend and the whole fight was utter nonsense. I hear he’s switched up trainers. He was trying to be cute in there and to be honest… it was preposterous. He had a sparring partner in front of him and he was content to bring himself down to that level. Because he was trying to do something that isn’t natural for him, he was gassed during the last 3 rounds, which were competitive.
No way Miranda should be doing anything but tossing that jab out there to set up the big right hand. He can’t hurt a child with his left and his defense doesn’t really exist either.
I’ve never seen his next opponent, but if Miranda tries to be a slickster in there, he’s in trouble. He should just be who he is.
