Orlando Salido's July 23 Opponent Changed, Mike Oliver Pulls Out

Stay connected for news and updates

Orlando Salido will not be facing Mike Oliver on July 23 in Mexico, as the American fringe contender has pulled out of the fight. Top Rank sent out a press release which named Kenichi Yamaguchi (17-1-2, 4 KO) as the new opponent, which is frankly probably no worse of a fight than Oliver was on paper.

BoxRec is still listing Jessie Albaracin (14-3-3, 12 KO) as Salido's opponent, but again, Yamaguchi is from Top Rank directly. You may remember Yamaguchi from that chaotic disgrace in Australia against Billy Dib in 2009.

The 30-year-old Salido has also been in talks to rematch Juan Manuel Lopez, the man he lifted his belt from in April in a great fight, but that won't happen until the fall months at least. Lopez wanted the fight in August, but Salido wanted a victory lap defense at home in Ciudad Obregon.

Salido vs Yamaguchi will be shown in the U.S. on Fox Deportes. Lopez is expected to be ringside for the fight, and the Top Rank release says he'll fight "the winner" later this year.
