Tonight's edition of ShoBox: The New Generation begins at 11:05 p.m. EDT on Showtime, and marks the tenth anniversary of what has been over the years a vital program in American boxing, weeding out the pretenders and showing us the future contenders.
This time out, we'll see a pair of 130-pound fights. Blooming prospect Diego Magdaleno (19-0, 7 KO) takes on Alejandro Perez (15-2-1, 10 KO) in the 10-round main event. Magdaleno, 24, has become one of my favorite advanced prospects in the sport with his recent fights, as his power and technique have come along to make him a dangerous thumper with far more pop than his record might lead you to believe. Perez, 25, is fresh off of a first round knockout of Antonio Escalante on March 25, which sent Escalante from fringe contender to afterthought in a hurry.
In the co-feature, Casey Ramos (13-0, 4 KO) takes on late replacement opponent Georgi Kevlishvili (12-2, 3 KO). I haven't seen much of either fighter, but neither record indicates much power. Ramos has been matched soft thus far. Kevlishvili is coming off of a pretty close eight-round loss to prospect Ronny Rios, and his other loss was a KO-1 to Ayup Arsaev in 2009. He's lost two of three.
Bad Left Hook will have live coverage tonight, so join us for some late night fights.
