Juan Manuel Marquez tunes up for Manny Pacquiao tonight in Mexico.
Tonight at 9 p.m. EDT, Top Rank will have a free, legal live stream available to U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico viewers at TopRank.tv for the Juan Manuel Marquez vs Likar Ramos fight card tonight from Cancun.
Marquez (52-5-1, 38 KO) is leaving the lightweight division, having weighed in at 138 pounds for this fight with against Likar Ramos (24-3, 18 KO), a fighter whose record isn't as impressive as it first appears. The fight is a final tune-up for the 37-year-old Marquez, who has a date set for his next fight: November 12, against Manny Pacquiao, in a third fight between the two great rivals.
Marquez is fighting tonight to shake some rust and not go into the Pacquiao fight on a one-year layoff. There is some risk involved in this one -- not so much from Ramos' ability to beat Marquez, which is nil, but from any possible injury, including a cut that could affect his date with Pacquiao. He also needs to look impressive tonight to ensure Top Rank's ability to sell Pacquiao vs Marquez, which has drawn some criticism as a physical mismatch in 2011, which it was not in 2004 or 2008.
Also on tonight's card, Juan Manuel's brother Rafael Marquez (39-6, 35 KO) will get back in the ring against late replacement opponent Eduardo Becerril (12-7-2, 4 KO). It's a joke fight, really, but Rafael is also just hoping to shake some rust before potentially landing a big fight at 122 pounds against Japan's Toshiaki Nishioka. In what is probably the best fight of the card, top junior flyweight Roman Gonzalez (28-0, 23 KO) faces Omar Salado (22-3-2, 13 KO).
Join us tonight for what will hopefully be a smooth stream from Top Rank, and if not, remember that the card is televised by TV Azteca in Mexico, as well.
