According to Philly.com, welterweight contender Mike Jones is set to return on one of Top Rank's big cards late this year. Jones (25-0, 19 KO) could be part of either the Pacquiao vs Marquez undercard on November 12, or the Cotto vs Margarito show on December 3.
The 28-year-old Jones has been mentioned by Top Rank's Bob Arum as a possible 2012 opponent for Pacquiao, though many suspect that was far more about giving Jones some publicity than anything, as the Philadelphia native has never approached that level of competition to date. Jones has fought twice this year, getting some redemption against Jesus Soto Karass in a February rematch, and then wiping out unqualified opponent Raul Munoz on June 25 at the former ECW Arena in his home city.
There is still a lack of quality opponents at 147 pounds for someone in Jones' position, as he needs an opponent better than Soto Karass, and there just aren't a whole lot of them. One name that would be interesting is the UK's Kell Brook, who is stuck in the same spot as Jones, needing a step up but having a hard time finding one. That fight is probably unlikely, as both would be taking what promoters might feel is an unnecessary risk that can easily be avoided, particularly because Brook has no name value in the States, and Jones none much of anywhere.
