They're definitely going to go big on promotion for this fight, as promised. I think it'll be interesting to see how the public reacts to Victor Ortiz. As has been established, I think he's kind of a goofy dude, and I've thought so ever since I was nine years old, but he has a charm and charisma that a lot of people buy into. I mean, I thought the same about Oscar de la Hoya, and he was a huge star, and I hate Nickelback's music, and they sell jillions of records, so what do I know? But I think there's an outside chance Victor's middle school play sort of theatrics might make Mayweather the fan favorite here. Devil you know and all that.
Still, this level of online presence (a full, 20-minute video) is good to see from HBO. It's felt like they were behind Showtime the last couple of years in willingness to expand to the internet, where marketing is so easy, and thanks to the web sites that will put up the videos and other stuff, basically free promotion after the materials to promote are produced. That's just my feeling on what more you can do with boxing promotion in the year of 2011 and not 1996 or 1984, but then I may be biased.
