Freddie Roach: No Manny Pacquiao vs Amir Khan Fight

In Robert Morales' Insider Notebook on BoxingScene.com, star trainer Freddie Roach says his two top charges Manny Pacquiao and Amir Khan won't fight each other no matter what:

"They are not going to fight each other. I'm not going to let that happen because I train both fighters. They are both my fighters and they are like sons to me. How can I let both my sons fight? ... I've been with Manny for 10 years and I've been with Amir for three years. We have a great relationship. Why would I ruin that relationship?"

Really, as long as both Pacquiao and Khan are winning and doing so impressively, this is a question that's going to be asked, even if it just doesn't make sense due to the fact that they share a trainer and have become friends over the last few years. It's because it seems like a good fight, really, and eventually, it could possibly be the biggest possible fight at 147 pounds.

What if the fight really did become that lucrative? Would one of them seek out another trainer for a fight? I mean, you'd think that would be Khan, but Khan and Roach seem to have a great relationship, and I can't imagine either of them looking to go forward without Freddie, barring something really unexpected happening between the parties.

As for their sparring together, Roach says Khan starts ahead and Manny's experience helps him take over later. Sounds kind of generic, but what can you expect? Details?

Khan is due to fight in December, and Richard Schaefer says that possible opponents include Erik Morales (which Schaefer seems to be pushing but I just don't see happening), the Peterson vs Cayo winner from this week's Friday Night Fights, and the Guerrero vs Maidana winner. Those two fight on August 27.

Wow!!...Having Roach as an exclusive trainer would be a tremendous advantage for the other boxer.

I mean can you imagine knowing your in’s and out’s, weaknesses and strengths …. what an advantage.

True it would be an advantage for sure. But I really hate when fighters will not fight each other that’s the name of the game. I just don’t see why they can’t fight and make money together. It happens far too often IMO.

I just don’t see why they can’t fight and make money together.

They have the same trainer, who also happens to be the best trainer in boxing! Neither of them is going to want to give that up. And they are all good friends, almost family. Seems like a legitimate excuse to me.

Does to me too. Suggests a laudable level of personal standards regarding all concerned.

i think A Mere Con and Manny doesn’t mind fighting each other, but Roach will be the one having difficulty choosing which one he will train. As far as their sparring session which many claimed Con got the upperhand.. well, that’s why they called it sparring.. in real world the outcome will be so different. As for Con if he’s willing to go toe to toe again with Maidana, I think ithis time Maidana will beat Con.. on their first fight.. Maidana staggered Con in the 10th round and in the 11th whenever Maidana connects.. Con clenches him..

If Khan were ever able to fight and beat Mayweather, than a fight with Manny should, at the very least, be considered.

If khan continues to win, days come khan will get off from roach. This things will be similar when Khan did it to Alex Ariza for other reason. Taking the throne as from Pacquiao as p4p King is not far from Khan’s mind.
