Video: Lucian Bute Knocks Out Jean Paul Mendy
Earlier today in Romania, Lucian Bute defended his super middleweight belt against France's Jean Paul Mendy, and scored a beautiful fourth round knockout of the challenger. Here's the video:
This is another KO of the Year contender, and this is turning into a hell of a weekend for boxing. Last night's Friday Night Fights was outstanding, and on Solo Boxeo Tecate, Jessie Vargas scored a hellacious knockout of Walter Estrada, too, though that one wasn't as pretty to me because Estrada left himself open on a slip. And we haven't even gotten to the Rios vs Antillon fight, and a pretty strong HBO double-header, too.
So hey, for those of you who might stumble over here today, but gave boxing the write-off after last week's Klitschko vs Haye snoozer, this weekend is a great indication of why you should probably not just jump in for the "big events," because those are rarely the reasons that we watch boxing.

“He did what he was supposed to do.” There’s no doubt Bute is world class, but Mendy was knocked out in one round by Bika (Bika was dq’d, I know). Let’s not forget that Bute should have lost that first Andrade fight. I know he’s been knocking people out consistently, but what happens when he gets dragged into deep water again?

No, that’s not true. Ref Marlon was a kook in the ring, but the round was over before the ten count was. We’ve all re-watched with our Stopwatches of Truth.

As a life-long boxing fan the Klitschko-Haye fight didn’t turn me off, though it did almost put me to sleep.
What I cannot wait for is the Zab Judah-Amir Khan fight on the 23rd. I think that fight is going to be a war.
Amazing!
I believe Bute will KO Pavlik if that fight happens. On the chin or by a body shot.

I don't think Klitschko-Haye was a snoozer,
even if it didn’t turn out as expected. Anyone who took the time to watch or follow it will be paying attention tonight.
DAMN
Bute is wasting his time fighting these guys.
So close and yet so far. The story of my sports fandom.
Greater champions have fought worse opponents.
