Lucian Bute Won't Fight Cloud, Waiting for Super Six Winner After 11/5 Fight

Adviser and matchmaker Gary Majeski has clarified the position of Lucian Bute's team on his November 5 fight, and says that it won't be a catchweight bout with light heavyweight titlist Tavoris Cloud, and that Bute is not looking to move up right now.

Bute (29-0, 24 KO) has an open Showtime date on November 5 that won't go to Kelly Pavlik, either, and now looks likely to head to veteran Glen Johnson, who has said he's as interested as ever in traveling to someone else's home base for a big fight. The Romanian-born Bute is in need of a credible opponent, and even though Johnson lost a competitive bout to Carl Froch earlier this year, he's still a viable contender and would be a step up over recent Bute opponents like Jesse Brinkley, Jean Paul Mendy, and Brian Magee.

Majeski also says that Bute is preparing to fight the winner of the Super Six World Boxing Classic. The victor will be decided on October 29, when Andre Ward meets Carl Froch in New Jersey on Showtime.

Johnson is ready and willing; just make the fight already.

With Johnson, there are the ingredients to make a good fight, but in a way, I wouldn’t mind seeing someone off the radar in there against Bute. How about James Degale or George Groves? I mean of course Bute would be heavily favored, but there’s some intrigue. Maybe it’s just me.

We’ve seen Bute beat Andrade for 16 of 18 rounds and I believe Johnson is comparable to Andrade. I don’t see this fight going very different. Bute knocking him out would be impressive.

Does anyone know who got the better of whom in sparring?

I wouldn’t throw Degale or Groves to the fire yet. They are fresh faces, but I don’t want to see them potentially ruined early.

Johnson is a way better boxer and just as good a fighter re Librado Andrade.

I’d rather watch Bute fight GJ than Pavlik anyway, so this is a win in my book. Also glad to hear him eager to take on the winner of the super 6. Good news all around.
