Photos: Joseph Agbeko Struggles, Makes Weight for Abner Mares Fight

Joseph Agbeko didn't make it easily, but he did make weight for his fight with Abner Mares. (Photo by Tom Casino/SHOWTIME)

Joseph Agbeko had some trouble making weight today for tomorrow night's bantamweight fight on Showtime with Abner Mares, coming in at 118.4 and then 118.2 pounds, and having to come back 45 minutes later to come in at the limit of 118 pounds. Abner Mares weighed in at 117.5 pounds.

Whether or not Agbeko (28-2, 22 KO) will have trouble tomorrow remains to be seen, but struggling to make weight late like this does open further questions about his conditioning, which was already an issue given his back injury earlier this year, which canceled this fight's original April 23 date. Mares (21-0-1, 13 KO) has been noted as the betting favorite (we'll have odds later on) already, and if Agbeko doesn't have his legs tomorrow, he could be in real trouble.

But we do know that this is a good matchup on paper, and I think everyone's pretty excited for the fight. It's overdue and they both earned their way here with good wins. We'll have live coverage tomorrow night.

Hmm. Trouble making weight, recent bout of sciata…Mares by stoppage at +550 is looking pretty good right now!

He didn’t make weight, but it WAS close. I think King Kong is a good bet to take, at those odds, actually.
