Bad Left Hook Live Results and Coverage: Joseph Agbeko vs Abner Mares

Joseph Agbeko and Abner Mares square off tonight on Showtime. (Photo by Tom Casino/SHOWTIME)

Tonight at 10 p.m. EDT on Showtime, Joseph Agbeko puts his IBF bantamweight title on the line tonight against Abner Mares at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. Bad Left Hook will have live round-by-round coverage of the fight.

Agbeko (28-2, 22 KO) is recovering from a back injury that postponed this fight, originally scheduled for April 23. Mares (21-0-1, 13 KO) is the betting favorite, and is the favorite among Bad Left Hook staffers and it seems most media, as well. He's the younger man, and has proven himself in the ring in his last two bouts against top competitors Yonnhy Perez and Vic Darchinyan. Agbeko has also fought and defeated both of those men, so these two have plenty of common history.

If Agbeko is 100% physically, boxing fans should expect no less than a very good fight tonight. Agbeko and Mares are both physical, tough-minded fighters who bring action. Join us tonight!

Undercard is over at the event and we just have the main event left. Undercard was alright I guess but all the fights except the first one have ended early. I also have an awesome view.

Agbeko vs Mares Round 1

Mares pressing forward to start. Mares targeting the body, and he’s starting very fast. Left hook lands. Mares eats a left hook, then a right from Mares in return. Quick start. Agbeko with a sneaky right hand. Mares now not moving right forward. Both throwing left hooks. Mares low blow, not called. Mares now with good straight right hands! Agbeko to the body again. Another low blow (that’s three) and Mares gets warned lightly. Right hand, left hook from Mares, but Agbeko is there with him. Now Mares with a great flurry on the ropes. He looks really sharp. Agbeko down and flies nearly out of the ring, but the ropes sling him back toward the ring. I thought that was a slip, but nope. Mares FIRING to end the round. Mares is LIGHTNING right now.

Agbeko vs Mares Round 2

\

Both going to the body. This is just fast-paced boxing. Agbeko throwing lots of wide left hooks. Doesn’t look like there’s much on those. Mares with another low blow, and another. Those are really borderline, but he’s gotta bring it up. Agbeko just doesn’t look like he’s at Mares’ speed tonight. Mares is rattling him and wearing him out early. Mares body work, and Agbeko gets a right hand in. Agbeko has been on his bike too much. Lead right by Agbeko. Mares with a left hook upstairs, not clean. Agbeko looking more composed down the stretch of this round, but still a Mares round.

Agbeko vs Mares Round 3

Agbeko eats a left hook, but Mares does too, and his looks a little stronger tonight. Good trade of body shots. Agbeko doesn’t fight quite as well when he’s not leading the action. We saw this somewhat in the first fight with Perez, too. The second time he led the action and won. But when he’s not the one going first, he’s just not as successful. But he’s getting into rhythm this round a little bit. They’re having some nice exchanges. Mares with a right hand. His round still.

Even round for two minutes, but then Agbeko NAILS Mares with a right hand that stuns Agbeko. Mares has some cobwebs. Agbeko has a little confidence now, but now Mares comes back. Agbeko let him off the hook. Uppercut inside by Agbeko snaps Mares’ head back a little.

Agbeko vs Mares Round 6

Agbeko with a right. Jab is working well. But Mares is just landing flashier punches, I think, and not just flashier, but often better. This is a damn good fight though. I think they’re overstating Agbeko’s “lackluster” performance a good bit. I mean I have it 4-1, but every round he wins, Mares is earning. Heads came together, and there’s a bad cut on Mares’ left eyebrow. Mares hits him in the dick for about the 50th time. The referee has got to do something. Another low blow from Mares. Jesus, come on.

Agbeko drilling him with some good shots. Mares has started to land less really solid punches as the fight has gone on, and this thing is drifting into even territory. Jim Gray asked Mora why he was helping Mares win. Then showed the replay of the clear nutshot KD and essentially told him there was no excuse for calling that a KD.

He didn’t mince words. He told Mora that he spent the night helping Mares win, warning Agbeko pointlessly instead, and made him watch the replay of the low blow that he called a knockdown. And quoted Bernstein about how disgraceful the refereeing was.

by DPlainview on Aug 13, 2011 11:32 PM EDT up reply actions

I thought he won around 5………so about 7-5 sounds about right.

by DPlainview on Aug 13, 2011 11:32 PM EDT up reply actions

It was a close fight. Anywhere from 7-5 Agbeko to 8-4 Mares would’ve been reasonable in my book. Mares’ first knockdown was legit.

The second knockdown was on a clear as day dick punch a foot from the ref’s face.

The issue isn’t so much the rounds as the fact that Mares was allowed to keep punching Agbeko in the dick at will, with no deductions, and even getting a KD outta it.

Yeah, they had a really good camera angle where it showed Agbeko’s right foot slipping on a slick spot on the canvas and that being the primary cause of the tumble. I will say that if the rest of the fight had been fair, I would have just chalked that up to bad luck on Agbeko’s part, because we know stuff like that happens and refereeing isn’t an easy job. But what happened tonight happened, and Mora doesn’t deserve the benefit of the doubt.

Marus fought dirty, but the real villian is certainly the ref. With proper point deductions, he would have lost.

Acting as if they didn’t happen, it was close—he probably would have barely won.

As it was, every time he warned Mares, he warned Agbeko twice for holding the head down.

by Apprentice on Aug 13, 2011 11:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I think 115-113 Mares w/o the bogus KD’s……………..but the ref should have taken at least one or maybe two points from Mares…………………..so 113-113 seems fair.

by DPlainview on Aug 13, 2011 11:38 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s hard to say: if Mora had given a point deduction in say, round 4 when Mares started deserving one, things could’ve been different. In the Darchinyan fight, after Mares got the point deducted, I remember him being a little better at keeping punches above the belt. Maybe Agbeko takes over a round or two earlier than scratches out the win w/o the terrible knockdown call.

by Sam5001 on Aug 13, 2011 11:39 PM EDT up reply actions

It would have been pretty close, if it had been fair. Mares had the better of it for the first half, then Agbeko came on later. Mares might have taken it by a point, maybe.

by DrRck on Aug 13, 2011 11:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Ugh I hate to do this but if the ref told the fighters that the belt line was legal then a lot of those punches weren’t low. The knock down absolutely was but a lot of them were right on the belt. We’ll see, I need to watch a replay but for now I feel sick.

by Manuwar on Aug 13, 2011 11:39 PM EDT reply actions

your right………….a lot were on the beltline……..I"m not sure where Mora set the low blow range at.

by DPlainview on Aug 13, 2011 11:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I saw a number of blows on the belt line that would have been legal blows.

But I would say, at minimum, there were 15 legitimate low blows by Mares that never even received a warning.

Terrible.
