This week's season finale of ESPN Friday Night Fights will feature another guest commentator, as color analyst Teddy Atlas is still busy training Alexander Povetkin for his August 27 fight with Ruslan Chagaev. His substitute this week will be undefeated super middleweight Andre Ward.
Last week, Bernard Hopkins filled in and spent a couple hours having his ring kissed by Joe Tessitore, while Sergio Mora talked about himself the week before. Ward has done some commentary in the past, so like Mora and Hopkins he has a bit of experience. Now we find out if he's better than they are. It won't be terribly difficult to top Mora's August 5 performance (to be honest, he's usually much better than that), but Hopkins was terrific last week when he got a moment to break down the fights here and there.
The main event this week is a really intriguing junior middleweight matchup between highly-touted but utterly untested prospect Demetrius Andrade (13-0, 10 KO) and veteran battler and former "Contender" winner Grady Brewer (28-12, 16 KO). Brewer is coming off of a decisive knockout of prospect Fernando Guerrero on June 17.
The co-feature will see lightweight veteran David Diaz (36-3-1, 17 KO) taking on Philadelphia's Hank Lundy (20-1-1, 10 KO). Lundy spends a lot of time on Twitter calling out the top guys at 135 and 140, but he's still sort of rebuilding from his 2010 loss to John Molina. Diaz had a lot of trouble in his last fight against Rob Frenkel, but won a majority decision in his hometown of Chicago on January 28. He'll be close to home again for this one, as Hammond is just over the Illinois border in Indiana.
