Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero has made his first public statement since we found out yesterday that his August 27 fight with Marcos Maidana has been scrapped due to an injury to Guerrero's left shoulder. This is from his official Twitter account:
I'm disappointed, but more so for the fans. Hopefully I'll be back sooner than later. I thank everyone for their support.
Nothing major, but good to hear from him. The extent of Guerrero's shoulder injury is not yet known, but I'm sure we'll find out soon. Golden Boy did express some concern that Guerrero could be on the shelf for a while, which would seem to indicate there's a possibility he'll need surgery. Hopefully that's not the case, but if it is, then hopefully he gets it done soon and we can see him back in the ring as soon as possible.
What really hurts about this is that it was a long-awaited chance for Guerrero, 28, to get into a main event position in a hot division. He's been trying to find a big fight for a long time, but has steadily been placed on undercards. He's done his job and won his fights, but this was set up to be a possible breakthrough fight. Now he'll have to wait again.
