With his August 27 HBO main event against Robert Guerrero off, junior welterweight titlist and contender Marcos Maidana is looking to get back into the ring quickly.
One rumor that has picked up steam today has been that Maidana (30-2, 27 KO) will be back on September 16 in Argentina. This morning, I contacted Maidana's adviser, Sebastian Contursi, who confirmed that a fight on that date is possible, but definitely not set just yet.
"That's only one of the possible options. Marcos Maidana is ready and willing to fight ASAP," Contursi told Bad Left Hook. "However, we still need to go through Golden Boy Promotions and see what they have for Marcos. As of now no dates are open, we were told, and that's why we thought that maybe we could have a warm-up bout in Argentina."
If the September 16 fight does go ahead, no opponents are yet in line, but it would likely just be a tune-up bout for Maidana to stay sharp, and to not basically lose time. He's already put in a full training camp in Puerto Rico for the Guerrero fight, and it would be a shame for that to go to waste, so they're looking to make something happen.
Golden Boy has several TV dates remaining this year, but the cards are basically filled. Unless Maidana were to unexpectedly land a rematch with Amir Khan in December, there's probably nothing that can be budgeted in, and it's unlikely they're looking to spend big money on a Khan co-feature that could, in theory, have Maidana in action on the same night. The 9/17 and 10/15 PPVs from Golden Boy and HBO already have full undercards, too.
