Tonight's edition of Solo Boxeo Tecate is live at 11:30 p.m. EDT (Telefutura) from the UIC Pavilion in Chicago, and features one of the best prospects in boxing in the main event.
Frankie Gomez (10-0, 8 KO) of East Los Angeles puts his undefeated record on the line in a potentially strong test against Adrian Granados (8-1-1, 5 KO), a Chicagoland native. Granados, 22, took veteran Lanardo Tyner to an eight-round draw in March, and his only career loss came in his second pro fight back in 2008. Gomez, 19, is a very highly-touted prospect who was an amateur rival of another blue chipper, Jose Benavidez Jr.
In the co-feature, Omar Figueroa (12-0-1, 9 KO) of Welasco, Texas, takes on Marcos Herrera (6-6-1, 2 KO), a Colorado club fighter who has been used as an opponent for Golden Boy prospects in recent fights. In his last three, he's lost to GBP lightweight prospects Michael Perez (TKO-8), Hylon Williams Jr (UD-8), and Jamie Kavanagh (UD-6). He's been able to take all of those guys deep into the fight and give them some rounds, and we'll see if he can do the same tonight with Figueroa. Herrera is a scrappy fighter without much power, but he takes a good shot.
Both fights are scheduled for eight rounds.
We'll be here with live round-by-round coverage and discussion of both fights, so if you're having a dull Friday night, come on in.
