All fighters can be defeated. They can hone their skills to the point that they appear neigh invincible but in the words of Ser Barristan Selmy, a fictional and renown knight from the Song of Ice and Fire novels would put it:
“I have seen a hundred tournaments and more wars than I would wish, and
however strong or fast or skilled a knight may be, there are others who can match him. A man
will win one tourney, and fall quickly in the next. A slick spot in the grass may mean defeat, or
what you ate for supper the night before. A change in the wind may bring the gift of victory."
Ser Barristan raises the important issue of outside factors, the unknown, things you can’t foresee and account for.
Odlanier Solis suffered a TKO defeat in round one after badly injuring his knee in a stumble as a most recent example. These unforeseen factors are present in real fights – some men lose their concentration for a moment and are kissing the canvas in the next, just ask Lennox Lewis.
If there’s one thing that watching boxing and MMA had taught me it’s that no matter how skilled you are, defeat is perhaps only a moment away – often to the surprise of both the spectators and the fighter himself.
Real fights aren’t fought on paper and as commentators tell us time and time again, “Anything can happen in the ring” and Mayweather can be beaten.
You know, I was watching some of Mayweather’s fights the other day and I noticed something. Mayweather is more open to attack when he puts up a more orthodox defense instead of his usual slip and roll defense. Another attacking point I see is working behind a stiff jab and not overextending the follow up straight. Now I’m not saying I have cracked the code by any means but go back and look at the 2nd round of the Mosley fight where he got rocked as hard as I have ever seen him get rocked. You’ll notice on the first big punch Mosley threw a jab and then that hard overhand shot but didn’t reach for it. Then, on the second one that buckled his knees you’ll notice that he was holding his hands up. It’s almost as though Mayweather can’t see punches coming when his hands are up. It just proves that his reflexes are crazy quick. I would love for someone to do a Sports Science type experiment to test his reflexes. Anyway, I do think Mayweather is beatable and I’m also going to go back and try to find his oldest videos to see if what I saw in the Mosley fight and the (I’m drawing a blank as to who he was fighting when I first noticed it) other one can be seen. I don’t think Ortiz has what it takes to beat him but if he rocks Mayweather early the way he did Berto I can see it being a very tense few rounds for Mayweather. (As a side note I would love to see Roger’s reaction to Mayweather coming back to the corner hurt.)

He’d stop the fight. Bet you anything he would.
