Daniel Geale vs Eromosele Albert: Live Results and Round-by-Round Coverage

Daniel Geale makes the first defense of his IBF middleweight title against Eromosele Albert today in Tasmania.

This morning at 5 a.m. EDT, Bad Left Hook will bring you live coverage of the card from Tasmania headlined by IBF middleweight titlist Daniel Geale and American (by way of Nigeria) challenger Eromosele Albert.

Geale (25-1, 15 KO) won the IBF belt from Sebastian Sylvester on the road in Germany on May 7, and this will be his first defense of the title. He's chosen to go back home for what does, frankly, amount to an easy first defense, with his reasoning being he wanted to bring a world title fight back to the fans who have supported him from day one. That's fair enough. Albert (24-4-1, 12 KO) doesn't figure to be much of an obstacle, and after this, Geale has expressed interest in coming to America to fight a top middleweight, maybe even world champion Sergio Martinez. A win for Albert, 37, would be one of the biggest upsets of the year.

But the main event isn't all that's going on, as there are a couple of solid domestic fights on the bill, too. In a 12-round super middleweight belt for the PABA title, Serge Yannick (13-1, 6 KO) defends against Jamie Pittman (21-2, 8 KO). Also on the card will be featherweight prospect Joel Brunker (19-0, 13 KO), who takes on Filipino Reynaldo Belandres (14-2-2, 9 KO), in what could potentially be a trap fight. Belandres gave Billy Dib some problems last year before getting knocked out in the sixth round.

Ugly, ugly KO. Kid looks OK, though. Good to see. Took two or three punches standing, knocked out, before hitting the canvas hard.

Yannick vs Pittman Round 1

Both landing decent shots in the first two minutes, Yannick appearing just a bit uncomfortable with Pittman’s southpaw stance, but pressuring anyway. Right hand by Yannick knocks Pittman back. Yannick getting more and more confident, walking right to Pittman and throwing. Pittman with some nice body shots along the way.

Yannick vs Pittman Round 2

Pittman and Yannick really starting to trade good shots in this round, and tangling up a bit too. Pittman starting to have some nice success with straighter punches. Heads coming together too much for anyone’s liking. Pittman cut from it, and not good at all. Oh, not good at all. Fight stopped — REF SAYS FROM A PUNCH? Holy shit.

Enjoyable fight. Enjoyed Belandres, a lot of the same feeling (different styles) as with Granados the other night. Belandres looked much the smaller fighter at catchweight, at weight better than he looked in this fight, maybe.

Geale vs Albert Round 1

Albert comes charging out of his corner, but Geale is there to meet him and, really, nothing much comes of it. But Albert is looking to pressure quickly. Geale bouncing and looking for range. He’s quicker and classier than Albert. Both go to the body, and Albert really starts firing hard shots downstairs, but Geale not letting them fully through. Tony Weeks is your referee, by the way.

Albert looks pretty good to start, actually. Geale had just a bit of trouble making weight and it looks like Albert’s looking to get to him early. Albert’s body work is a sign he thinks that Geale might be a bit soft. Geale hasn’t timed him just yet. Crowd keeps booing when there are rabbit punches that get warned, but they’re coming from both guys. Geale coming up a little short on a lot of his punches. Aussie commentators feel Geale is winning the round “quite clearly,” but I disagre. Albert with a nice right hand. I liked what Albert did this round.

Geale vs Albert Round 2

Geale actually looks a bit fidgety, maybe from fighting at home. But he’s looking very sharp to start the second, moving better and throwing more accurately. Albert staggered a bit. Albert winging shots, coming in a little wild, and now Geale is starting to play some very nice defense, making him miss a lot more. Geale’s body shots starting to work now. Albert has him on the ropes, but Geale still comes out of that better than does Albert, who tried to press. I think there’s an Australian Rachel Cordingley in the crowd. Yeah, this is much better from Geale this round. First was close and probably went to him anyway, but he’s showing his class now.

Bad Left Hook
"To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day..."

by Scott Christ on Aug 31, 2011 8:16 AM EDT reply actions

Albert staying busy, definitely here to fight, but Geale is just outboxing him and seems to have him timed very well. Albert still doing his best, looking to get the body, trying to jab a little at his corner’s request, but just not a good enough talent. He’s doing what he can to make this a fight, but I think that’s going to get him knocked out on a stiff counter at this rate. Geale with a right hand. Both a bit sloppy this round, as Albert is uglying it up some.

Geale vs Albert Round 3

Geale switch-hitting nicely the last couple of rounds, and starting to really fluster Albert. Staying on the move nicely defensively, and just plain making Albert work more than Albert needs to if he’s going to find a way to win this fight. Geale has slickness that Albert just can’t cope with overall, though Eromosele is still having his moments, and he’s closer this round than he has been the last two. Geale eats a BIG right hand there, but Albert just doesn’t have big power and I don’t think he’s got enough zing on the fastball to stop Geale.

Geale vs Albert Round 5

Geale back in the rhythm he started losing a bit in the latter part of the previous round. Albert still landing here and there, but basically one shot at a time. He’s keeping it entertaining and making a battle of it, but Geale is just out of Albert’s league, basically. Geale trying to find a hard right hand, comes up a bit short. Geale with a better right hand there.

Geale vs Albert Round 6

Geale starting to land sloppy left hooks. Albert just stalking him constantly. Little pot shots from Geale, but unfortunately for Eromosele, he’s not landing much clean either. Geale with nice hands up defense that cuts off an Albert rally attempt. This is a close round with a minute left, as Geale’s activity has slipped some. Good crowd, by the way. Albert just not landing enough clean shots for my liking.

Geale vs Albert Round 7

Geale with a right hand. Geale now doing some much better work than last round. They’re overstating how much Albert is being hurt, but hey, they’re also understating the quality of Albert’s gameplan. That uppercut that got in there stopped Albert in his tracks more than the rest of the hurt moments they’ve called, I think. Geale much more active this round, outworking Albert pretty nicely.

Geale 10-9
Geale 69-64

I think the Solis vs Oliva comp is a good one, actually.

Geale vs Albert Round 8

Geale starting the round fast again. I think if either of them is wearing down it might be Geale, whose body language between rounds isn’t particularly encouraging. I’ll say now that he’s a fine fighter, but would have no better shot against Sergio than Dzinziruk did, or Barker does.

Geale having a nice round, but does get backed down a little on a left hand from Albert. Right hand counter from Geale lands. They’ve got to stop saying “buckled” and all that. Albert landed just as well as Geale just did but they shit over Geale. This is tough bias – I mean, I think they’re right that Geale is winning wide, but Albert really isn’t getting hurt as much as they’re letting on, and it’s not dominant, just consistent winning of rounds.

Geale vs Albert Round 9

Albert whacking away at the body when they get close, but mostly Geale is staying outside well. Really kind of an indifferent round here from Geale, as he’s taking a bit of a breather and just working around the ring. Albert pressuring with all he’s got, but not finding clean punching opportunities. Nice left from Geale. Tougher round to score — I’m going with Geale, but almost feel bad. Albert is doing what he can, but Geale is just landing better shots and making Albert miss, even laying back some.

Geale vs Albert Round 10

Geale with nice work at range, still moving well. His gas tank is looking really good here, actually, after I wondered earlier if he was tiring, and he’s picking up the pace. Geale just boxing, boxing, boxing. Crowd urging him on to go for a stoppage, but I don’t think he’ll give in to the demands. Taking dumb risks does nothing for him at this stage. Albert really making it rough this round. Both fighters show respect after the round. I think Albert, despite his corner telling him differently, feels he’s winning this fight.
