McCloskey vs Prescott: Live Results and Round-by-Round Coverage
Today at 3 p.m. EDT on Sky Sports 3 from the United Kingdom, Paul McCloskey and Breidis Prescott will duke it out in a WBA junior welterweight eliminator, with the winner in theory in line for a rematch with Amir Khan that probably isn't going to happen.
McCloskey (22-1, 12 KO) is coming off of an April 16, six-round technical decision to Khan, in which he didn't win a round. Prescott (24-2, 19 KO) has won three straight since dropping back-to-back fights to Miguel Vazquez and Kevin Mitchell in 2009, a year after his 54-second upset of Khan launched him from unknown to name fighter.
To keep being relevant, Prescott badly needs this win. McCloskey would be the second-best scalp on his record, but that goes both ways, as Prescott would perhaps be the best win of McCloskey's career.
In the co-feature slot, super bantamweight prospect Carl Frampton (10-0, 6 KO) takes on late replacement opponent Mark Quon (11-3-1, 2 KO) for the vacant Commonwealth title.
We'll have live-round-by-round coverage, starting a big, long day of live fight coverage that will continue with Klitschko vs Adamek and Gamboa vs Ponce de Leon, plus Mayweather vs Ortiz: 24/7.

Frampton vs Quon Round 1

A couple of midget white guys with lots of tattoos. At least they’re not skinheads like MMA guys.
Frampton taking his time for the most part here in the first round, feeling out Quon. Good little right hand lands. This kind of looks like twins fighting so far. Frampton looks the stronger, better fighter in the first round. Sample size, but this looks like his to lose. He’s relaxed and seeing what he can do.

Frampton more or less having his way here. Not beating him up terribly, but this is clearly not a big challenge for him. Quon doesn’t have any zip on his punches and he’s not able to get Frampton’s respect here.

And also when fighting someone who hardly fights back.

McCloskey vs Prescott Round 1

McCloskey waiting, and Prescott doing some nice work with a right hand and then a sweeping shot to the body. Right hand from Prescott. Good body shots by Prescott. Very nice work. He does look zoned in here. Right hand down the pipe by Prescott. Oh man – McCloskey’s stupid hands down defense are going to kill him. This was my worry for his side in this fight. If there’s a guy Prescott can expose at 140, it could be McCloskey due to style.
McCloskey kind of poking him a little bit. McCloskey to the mat but called a knockdown? Looked like a shove. Bad call by the ref, I think.

One thing i thought might favour Prescott in this fight is level of comp. Even though he’s lost a couple since Khan, Prescott has been mostly fighting in the US and mostly against a good level of competition. Moreso than McCloskey anyway, imo.
Prescott probably learned from his losses to Vasquez and Mitchell too.
McCloskey vs Prescott Round 2

Right hand again by Prescott. Boy, McCloskey is doing himself zero favors. Body work by Prescott again looks good, right and left hand working. Prescott keeping his range. Another right gets in, but caught some glove. Good jab by Prescott busts McCloskey’s nose. McCloskey looks terrible so far. Another right gets close. McCloskey has zero rhythm. He’s ducking some punches nicely, but that’s it. No offense coming from him that means much of anything.
Finally McCloskey gets a good left in, but then walks into a right hand. This is really all Breidis Prescott thus far, in my opinion. He’s thoroughly outboxing McCloskey. Prescott does have a habit of letting his mind wander, and that might be the best bet McCloskey has so far.

McCloskey vs Prescott Round 3

Right hand lands again. McCloskey trying to time counters but just not getting it. ACTUALLY, Glenn, Khan DOES have this height and reach. An inch shorter than Prescott on both.
McCloskey making Prescott miss a bit more now, but he’s still doing nothing on offense. Left to the body by Prescott. Jab, jab, jab, then he wings. McCloskey needs to go to Plan B, Plan C, or Plan Q. His nose is in a bad way. Prescott blocks a left from McCloskey. Both miss wild hooks. McCloskey doing a bit more this round, especially in the final minute, but still a Prescott round.

McCloskey vs Prescott Round 4

McCloskey starting this round better with the left hand. Starting to move more, especially moving his head more. He needed this from the start. Prescott does have a tendency to slow down in the middle rounds, so we’ll see if Paul can claw back in. Chopping right by Prescott, but then a jab and a left from McCloskey. Now getting some rhythm. Left hand again by McCloskey. Even just the feinting is giving Prescott more pause than he had earlier on.
Much, much, much better round for McCloskey, and a clear win for him. He’s looking like a totally different fighter this round, and so is Prescott.

Right hand by Prescott, but not as sharp as it was earlier. His power drains as the fight goes on, and his technique usually starts to fail him a bit, too. McCloskey will have his chance to win this fight still.
McCloskey slowing back down on offense a bit, but Prescott not taking great advantage. McCloskey needs to up his output to take this round in the final minute, because the best punches have been from Prescott. Prescott doing some nice defensive work with his elbow blocking a body shot. McCloskey staggering around the ring because his charges are so off-balance. He is a sloppy, sloppy fighter.

McCloskey vs Prescott Round 6

This was Prescott’s KO call round.
McCloskey’s footwork is heinous. I mean just fucking awful. McCloskey flicking a jab that means nothing. Left hand has no stank. Prescott is so comfortable at range. I mean, look, Prescott is still not a great fighter, but he’s really at ease in there. McCloskey doing some nice work this round, though. McCloskey stung on a big right hand! He says he’s not hurt, so of course he probably is. So he’s putting his hands down like a dummy.

McCloskey taking a while to get off his stool at the bell.
McCloskey has no offense whatsoever. None. Prescott has no respect for him. Apparently McCloskey believes that at world level, or even this close to it, you can win fights with pot shots and making the other guy miss, and then making a face with your hands down. This is a battle of attrition, but not one of those great ones where two tiring fighters throw it to the wind and fight like hell. This is McCloskey taking tired runs at Prescott, whose punches have lost all speed and power as usual by this point in the fight. Both guys missing, uh, everything. But this is McCloskey’s round, I suppose. This fight has really gone to hell.

No holding, no breaks in action really, constant movement. Fights get a lot worse than this one.

McCloskey vs Prescott Round 10

Prescott looks exhausted in the corner. McCloskey starting quicker again this round, and corners Prescott, but can’t do much. McCloskey slaps a little, but Prescott comes back with better shots, and the right hand stings McCloskey just a bit again, but not like earlier. Body shot by McCloskey. McCloskey with a good left hand. He’s built some momentum. Prescott has had some success this round, but I like McCloskey in this frame, too.

McCloskey vs Prescott Round 11

Prescott is totally wiped out. No stamina left whatsoever. McCloskey definitely in the better condition at this point and in control of the fight. McCloskey coming for Prescott, who has little to offer in counter. McCloskey easily winning this round. Prescott slips without McCloskey near him. His legs are gone. He’s gutting this out and might survive on the cards, but if he loses this thing, he’ll have no one to blame but himself. This was his fight early and he’s blowing it.

hey, we talked about the alienation of our technological societies too, using the half cut subway sandwich as a metaphor, so we’ve covered it all, pretty much
Like I said, we cover it all.
Next week we’ll be talking about Stephen Hawking’s shock inclusion in Dancind with the stars.

McCloskey vs Prescott Round 12

Crowd is white hot into the final round, all standing. Good for them. Up that atmosphere. Sadly, McCloskey’s glove has loose tape and the crowd sits down. Ha! But then we come back and they’re up. Now PRESCOTT has loose tape! HA! HA!
Crowd is WILD as McCloskey flies at Prescott! He’s AMPED UP! McCloskey pouring on the pressure in a big way, and you have to admire the way he’s trying to take this fight. Right hand Prescott, McCloskey with a left down the pipe in return. Left hook swipes McCloskey. Both guys digging in close, McCloskey outworking there. Both throwing very tired shots. But I’m liking this. Both are fighting with what they’ve got left, and McCloskey appears to have a bit more left.
Left hand by McCloskey again. Right hand by Prescott, nothing on it. Right hand Prescott again. McCloskey with a left, but nothing on that one. These guys are dunzo but fighting hard. Prescott closing the round VERY well, and I think he steals this one and takes the fight.

10-9 Prescott, 117-110
I could see it as as close as 115-112 for Prescott. Any closer would be suspect, a McClosky win would be a joke.

Not that Prescott was anything special, but that was a flat-out robbery. No way McClosky won seven rounds.
