Gamboa vs Ponce de Leon: Live Results and Round-by-Round Coverage

Yuriorkis Gamboa meets Daniel Ponce de Leon tonight on HBO.

Tonight at 10:30 p.m. EDT, HBO has the main event from Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, as top featherweights Yuriorkis Gamboa and Daniel Ponce de Leon officially end the latest Cold War between Top Rank and Golden Boy.

Gamboa (20-0, 16 KO) and Ponce de Leon (41-3, 34 KO) are drastically different fighters to be sure, but both have a habit of making for good fights, and Gamboa should be considered must-see TV no matter who he's fighting. The Cuban dynamo has left his fellow defectors of recent years in the dust, becoming a regular HBO headliner and one of the most exciting, explosive fighters in the sport, possibly knocking on the door of real stardom with just a couple more good wins.

That could start here, but Ponce de Leon won't be in Atlantic City to lie down and roll over, either. The Mexican slugger did lose his last fight on March 5, but he stepped up to 130 pounds to face top prospect Adrien Broner, and many felt he deserved the win in a tightly-contested 10-round battle.

Join us tonight as we wrap up a big day of live coverage.

Manning out for season + Texans "improved" defense = Texans AFC South Division CHAMPS

by battle axe of doom on Sep 10, 2011 10:51 PM EDT up reply actions

it's what you have to bet to make back 100 or win in excess of it.

Boxing writer: "Iran, what are you going to do when you retire?"
Iran Barkley: "Rob your house"

by Matt Miller on Sep 10, 2011 10:53 PM EDT up reply actions

so -200 equals 2 to 1 favorite, for example

Boxing writer: "Iran, what are you going to do when you retire?"
Iran Barkley: "Rob your house"

by Matt Miller on Sep 10, 2011 10:53 PM EDT up reply actions

also if the number is a positive number

like +150, that means how much you will win if you wager $100

by nickfoxx on Sep 10, 2011 10:54 PM EDT up reply actions

right, exactly

Boxing writer: "Iran, what are you going to do when you retire?"
Iran Barkley: "Rob your house"

by Matt Miller on Sep 10, 2011 10:54 PM EDT up reply actions

okay, so the bigger the – number, the bigger the favourite?

-875 is a big favourite right?

Bob Arum would promote Lucifer himself if he could put asses in the seats.

by Apprentice on Sep 10, 2011 10:55 PM EDT up reply actions

that means you have to bet $875 to win $100

Bob Arum would promote Lucifer himself if he could put asses in the seats.

okay, and how is that decided?

Bob Arum would promote Lucifer himself if he could put asses in the seats.

by Apprentice on Sep 10, 2011 10:57 PM EDT up reply actions

if you're asking about the over/under

the line was 6.5 rounds
if it goes past 1:30 into round 7, the over wins
if it doesn’t go past 1:30 into round 7, the under wins
the over was -140 and the under was +105 when i got down

by nickfoxx on Sep 10, 2011 10:59 PM EDT up reply actions

no, that’s actually the only thing i understand… I mean, how are those numbers decided? how is it decided that one person is a 14 to 1 favourite?

what does being a -375 favorite mean?

Bob Arum would promote Lucifer himself if he could put asses in the seats.

I watched this fight live this afternoon

and I must say that’s the only way to watch a Kilt. fight. Midday, along with college football. That is not to undercut the clear superiority of the brothers, but to me, it’s like watching Alabama against, say, Austin Peay. Sure they have a chance in theory, and it’s fine to watch a sport I like, but there are no surprises here.

Am I the only one who thinks sustained trades benefit De Leon? Yes, Gamboa will land more, but De Leon only needs to land one.

Gamboa 10-9, 19-19.

Gamboa seems more in control now of the fight to me. PDL is awkward and weird on offense, but Gamboa is landing more accurately. Gamboa with a clear skill advantage but PDL is holding his own pretty well, thought not quite winning. Odd rhythm to this fight.

29-28 Gamboa

2-1 Gamboa. Yuriorkis is cautious, but very effective. PDL will need to start applying the pressure a bit more here.

39-37 Gamboa

Shades of the Barros fight here though

Good hook from Gamboa 30 secs in. PDL kind of tricky, which I think is what is saving him. Gamboa puts em together well. Pressing now. PDL tries to fight back. Ref didn’t need to get in there like that methinks. Gamboa winning this round, but PDL is in it. Still, Gamboa landed more clean shots.

Another Gamboa round (39-37) but this is a lot more tense than I expected. PDL’s counters are serving to keep this cautious, if not necessarily super-close.

Gamboa 10-9, 49-46. But better round for De Leon.

Also, we’ve been mentioning De Leon’s hair, but I haven’t seen anyone rock the fade that Gamboa’s sporting since Scottie Pippin.

by schraubd on Sep 10, 2011 11:51 PM EDT reply actions

PDL wings large wide left hands throughout the round to minimal effect. I think frustration is setting in to a certain extent, which is not good to see. 49-46 Gamboa.

Hard right from Gamboa at 2:30. Looked good but maybe PDL is OK. PDL not hurt but Gamboa still looks in control. PDL landing OK now. Gamboa not very offensive at the moment. I think Gamboa gave away that round.

Lot of dancing around from Gamboa. Gamboa really confident but mostly dancing. Showing a lot of respect for PDL. Slowing down now. Hard right from Gamboa now. PDL doesn’t seem to have quite the skill level but he is giving it his all. I gave that last round to Gamboa.

58-56. Gamboa

Styles/fights, etc

Juanma also went life and death with Mtagwa and Gamboa blew him out in two, and Salido beat Juanma while Gamboa had no problem with him.

I’ve long been a Gamboa fan, but he’s tended to run hot and cold on the action in his past 8 or so fights.

Come on Gamboa, put the pedal to it. You are so much more athletic than this mofo. Go for it.

PDL is hesitant. Gamboa doesn’t want o punch in bunches. Maybe he is trying now.

Ref stops it and calls a cut on PDL an accidental headbutt. Doctor looking at it. Doctor stops it.

undramatic end to an undramatic fight. We are going to the cards and scoring the partial round.

I guess I have it 78-74 Gamboa. Whatever. Kind of a nothing fight, really.
