Mayweather vs Ortiz: Amir Khan Picks Mayweather Big, David Rodela Thinks Ortiz Has a Good Shot

With Saturday's big fight drawing near, those in boxing are starting to weigh in on the Mayweather vs Ortiz bout at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Earlier this week, Zab Judah picked Mayweather by late stoppage (you know).

The man who just beat Judah on July 23, Amir Khan, is also taking Mayweather big. Khan, of course, hopes to fight Mayweather next year. From The Daily Star:

"I think it will be one-sided and can see Ortiz either quitting on his stool or the fight being stopped around the ninth or 10th round."

This is more or less the pick of many in and around boxing, but just as our own Lee Payton says not to count out Victor Ortiz in this fight, so does David Rodela, a familiar sparring partner for Manny Pacquiao who has been part of Team Ortiz in this camp. From Chris Robinson of the Examiner:

"To me, anybody in boxing, anybody that has a punch, has a chance. And it only takes one shot. ... I tell you, I’m on his team and I think Victor has a great chance to beat Mayweather. A lot of people don’t think so, because he’s young and a lot of people play back to the Maidana fight, but that’s old news. You are only as good as your last fight. His last fight was a hell of a fight. So I can only imagine his next fight coming up. Staying active helps out a lot too. Mayweather not being that active, it’s going to hurt him."

Stay tuned to Bad Left Hook for much, much more in the coming days on everything Mayweather vs Ortiz.

I also think that Ortiz has a real chance. He has the ability to pile on pressure, and in all the Mayweather fights I’ve seen, this seems to fluster him. Also, Roach said after the Mosley fight that he thought that Mayweather’s legs were going; if this is true, and not just Roach downplaying his performance, Ortiz may have a real strength here, in addition to his stance and power.

Mostly, I think that if Ortiz can be patient, and not fall into cesspool of frustration Mayweather will try to throw him into, he can (just maybe) pull this one out in the late rounds.

I agree that an Ortiz decision is unlikely unless it’s a real blowout, which I think can’t happen.
