Gonzalez vs Mtagwa: Live Results and Round-by-Round Coverage

Gonzalez_vs_mtagwa_banner_medium

Tonight at 8:30 p.m. EDT from El Paso, Texas, Jhonny Gonzalez puts his WBC featherweight title on the line against rugged veteran Rogers Mtagwa, and Bad Left Hook will be here with live, round-by-round coverage.

The fight will be televised on Televisa in Mexico, as well as ESPN Deportes in the United States. For those without either channel, ESPN3 will be streaming the fight live online for free. The commentary will be in Spanish.

Also on the card, El Paso favorites Antonio Escalante and Mickey Roman will be in action in separate fights, and California welterweight prospect Javier Molina will face the tough John Revish, who gave Sadam Ali a bit of a test earlier this year on ESPN Friday Night Fights.

How many fights will be on the broadcast is unknown right now, but given the early start time I'd expect at least three. I could be totally wrong, however.

Join us this evening for some Thursday night boxing, and I'll say this with 100% honesty: Gonzalez vs Mtagwa has sleeper fight written all over it, and Escalante and Roman are always fun to watch.

I agree that Gonzalez vs Mtagwa sounds like a sleeper. Could be a total war. Mtagwa’s record is deceptive.

Molina vs Revish Round 1

Revish coming out throwing wild a little bit, Molina obliges. Right hand by Revish. Sneaky right by Molina lands. I like Molina, but don’t love him as a prospect. Iffy power, kind of open defensively at times, not that fast. GOOD right by Molina catches Revish wide open and stings him. But Revish quickly recovers. Body to head from Revish. Revish is just a little off on his shots, Molina looking much more accurate, and more patient. Good opening round for Molina.

Molina 10-9

Yea, he has good handspeed, throws good combos, but it’s hard to move up the ladder if your a part-time fighter.

Molina vs Revish Round 2

Revish starting to find a little more rhythm in the second round, and making Molina a bit more tentative. But there’s another good counter right from Molina. revish is throwing way more punches this round, but not landing a ton, and not landing much of real quality. He’s getting blocked a lot. It seems like Molina is content to let him do that and look for counter openings.

Better from Revish, but Molina landed the cleaner blows.

Molina 10-9
Molina 20-18

Exact right fight for Molina, as I expected. Revish making him earn it.

Molina vs Revish Round 3

Revish still giving Molina a nice test here, and I think starting to have some real success. Not sustained, which is losing him the rounds, but Molina isn’t having an easy night by any means. He’s still landing the cleaner shots and mostly shutting down Revish’s attempts to get into this thing. Good right by Revish. Left hook by Molina. Revish could stand to go to the body more right now.

Molina 10-9
Molina 30-27

Solid opening fight. Interesting to see Molina against a guy like this instead of a can.

Molina vs Revish Round 4

Now Revish actually targeting the body a bit more, but so is Molina. One thing I like here is that with a guy like Revish, who is a bit uncreative, Molina is willing to stand his ground at center ring and let Revish kind of work against himself.

Crowd looks very small, for what it’s worth.

Molina vs Revish Round 5

Revish having moments, and he has dictated where the fight goes and how it’s fought at times, but Molina is in control. It’s a patient, relaxed performance from him, and he looks just fine. Still don’t love him as a prospect.

Final round, looks about like the first five looked. Molina with no urgency because he doesn’t need any, cruising to the win. Now he takes charge a bit more and throws some nice shots upstairs, a couple to the body. hard right blocked by Revish’s glove. Right and left to the body from Revish.

Escalante vs Cuevas Round 1

Escalante down early, but ruled a slip. It’s an open question how he’s going to look here. He looks soft physically at lightweight, no doubt about that, and a bit tentative about engaging with Cuevas. Now Escalante gets him into the corner, unloads, and this fight is over.

Gonzalez vs Mtagwa Round 1

Gonzalez on his bike a bit to start the fight, trying to keep Mtagwa at bay, shooting a jab here and there. Left hook from Gonzalez misses. Mtagwa gets close, Gonzalez scampers. Now Gonzalez comes in and throws a combination. Nothing big lands. Gonzalez with a left to the body. Mtagwa throws a wide right to the body. Right upstairs from Gonzalez, blocked. Mtagwa gets Gonzalez to the ropes, Gonzalez ties up. Gonzalez is doing everything he can to keep Mtagwa at distance. Sweeping rights from Mtagwa, too slow to land. Body shot backs Mtagwa down, but he lands one in return. Good combo from Gonzalez. Gonzalez shooting his right hand a lot more near the end of the round. Good work from Gonzalez down the stretch.

Gonzalez vs Mtagwa Round 2

Gonzalez looking to the body, starting to find a bit of rhythm, starting to time the reckless Rogers a bit more. Right hand lands. Mtagwa’s going to walk into his own demise at this rate. Gonzalez backing him down now, chasing him around the ring. Left hook lands. Right hand. Mtagwa’s balance is awful and he’s falling out of this fight quickly. Right hand hurts Mtagwa. He’s just kind of walking around being hit. BIG HOOK stings Mtagwa, he staggers, and he stays up! Gonzalez ripping away in the corner, and it’s over!
