Mayweather vs Ortiz PPV Undercard: Live Results and Round-by-Round Coverage

Erik Morales is back on the big stage tonight on the Mayweather vs Ortiz undercard. (Photo by Ethan Miller/Getty Images)

The Mayweather vs Ortiz HBO pay-per-view event starts this evening at 9 p.m. EDT, and we'll have live coverage of all four fights on the main show. The three televised undercard bouts will be covered, round-by-round in this thread, with a separate post dedicated to the main event.

Here's what you'll see on tonight's undercard:

Junior Middleweights, 12 Rounds (WBC Title)
Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (37-0-1, 27 KO) vs Alfonso Gomez (23-4-2, 12 KO)

21-year-old phenom Alvarez is actually main eventing his own show tonight in Los Angeles at the Staples Center, facing 30-year-old battler Gomez for Alvarez's WBC junior middleweight title. It's a fight that should have good action, as Gomez isn't a cutie in there by any means, but Alvarez is the clear favorite, with large betting odds in his favor, and few giving Alfonso a serious chance to pull the upset.

Junior Welterweights, 12 Rounds (Vacant WBC Title)
Erik Morales (51-7, 35 KO) vs Pablo Cesar Cano (22-0-1, 17 KO)

Young Cano, 21, is a late-notice substitute for Lucas Matthysse, the Argentine contender who would have been favored by most to win this fight. But 35-year-old Morales looked his age and his ring age at yesterday's weigh-in, so despite the fact that on-paper, he's the obvious favorite in a big way, this could be interesting if Cano can press early.

Junior Welterweights, 10 Rounds
Jessie Vargas (16-0, 9 KO) vs Josesito Lopez (29-3, 17 KO)

22-year-old Vargas is Mayweather-promoted and endorsed, but this is a step up for him against Goossen Tutor's Lopez, a 27-year-old coming off of a career-best win eight months ago. This could be a show-stealing action fight.

I really hope Morales wins tonight and gets to be a four division champ. Otherwise I fear a Holyfield-style career continuance.

Nobody will read this and care and why should they?

I’m hoping not. Though the ways things are going I’m not ruling out another rematch with Barrera at junior middleweight in a couple of years.

Vargas vs Lopez Round 1

Vargas using his jab to start right to the body is a bit short. Good right by Lopez, now RIPPING to the body. Vargas throwing shots at range, not landing clean. Vargas left hook is high, glances off of Lopez. Vargas’ jab looks sharp so far. Right hand, and another good one from Vargas. More great combos from Vargas, landing hard and clean. Right hand by Vargas again. Solid action thus far with a minute left in the round. Both throw left hooks. Now getting tight and tying up some. Vargas with another good shot near the bell.

Vargas 10-9

Vargas vs Lopez Round 2

Vargas’ jab has been a nice difference maker thus far, and it’s Vargas starting the round strong with that. Body work from both, Vargas lands the best shot, a hard right. Vargas putting punches together very nicely. Right hand from Lopez. He just doesn’t look quite as physically strong right now. Six-punch combo from Vargas. Not a lot lands, but still impressive to see him do it. Lopez with a chopping left hook in close, but not hard. Left hook to the body by Vargas, but a good shot from Lopez and then a right hand. Left strays low from Vargas, and they tie up. Rights from both as they wrestle a bit. Vargas’ nose bleeding, and might have some blood under his left eye.

Vargas 10-9, but Lopez did well toward the end of the round

Vargas with a right. Starting the round fast again, shots to the head and body. Left hooks from both. Combo from Vargas, then a left hook to the body. Nice right from Vargas. Lopez is determined as hell, but — well, no but, Lopez with great body work when he corners Vargas. Right and left to the body from Vargas. Lopez’s pressure is starting to add up a bit. Vargas is getting bulled into the corner and worked on. Lopez with a good left hook, now there’s a firefight for a moment. Right to the body by Vargas. His power seems to be fading just a little bit. Good body shot by Lopez, then a nasty left hook on the chin. Counter right by Vargas. Great little round here, and a good fight so far. BIG combo from lopez to end the round!

Vargas vs Lopez Round 4

Lopez again pressuring, and just pouring it on, laying into Vargas when he gets him to the ropes. Vargas really is fading just a little bit. Left hook to the body by Vargas, followed by a right hand upstairs. Doesn’t look like he’s denting Lopez anymore. Vargas’ jab has largely been taken out — he’s using it, but not as hard, not as sharp as earlier. Lopez slowing down, stalking Vargas. Left hook to the body by Vargas. Right hand by Lopez, now he throws to the body but Vargas covers up. Lopez’s pressure still the story of the round, but Vargas has really landed better shots this round. He doesn’t have momentum really, but Lopez just isn’t busy enough this round.

Vargas vs Lopez Round 5

Uppercut by Lopez. He could work that in more. Nice right by Vargas, just a short little shot that Lopez walked into. Little right by Lopez, still stalking. Uppercut again from Lopez, but Vargas throwing there and landing too. Lopez with a right, not clean. Vargas with a nice uppercut, snaps Lopez’s head back. Lopez bullying him again. he’s got to get busier. Good left hook to the body by Vargas. Lopez stalking, but he’s not winning this round either. Vargas has turned this back around and started dealing better with the pressure. Lopez with an uppercut. Left hook by Lopez.

Vargas vs Lopez Round 6

Vargas with a left hand from underneath as they tangle. Lopez coming forward, but getting hit with shots and not throwing enough. Lampley has really gone overboard. Vargas with good shots to the body — no HBO call of them. Vargas moving around the ring. Lopez just not doing ENOUGH. He needs to get more consistent in his attack. Vargas with another left to the body. Good right and then left hook to the body by Lopez. Left hook by Vargas stings Lopez, but then Lopez comes back and starts pressuring nicely again. Heads come together a bet. Lopez has a small cut under the eye. Low blow by Lopez, not called. I swear to God, i don’t think Jim Lampley really pays attention anymore. At all.

Both trading. Cut is ruled caused by an accidental headbutt, says Lampley. Vargas again stepping back, jabbing, controlling range pretty well. Lopez with a left hook upstairs, then a right. If he’d let his hands go more, I think he’d be handily winning this fight. Lopez with a hook to the body. Vargas not landing significant punches this round. Right hand Lopez.

Vargas slips early. Body shots by Lopez. Vargas just picking at him from distance. Lopez trying to wear him down, but not throwing enough. He DOES look fresher, but he’s not using it. Lampley is greatly concerned with the judging. This is a good, close fight.

Lopez continuing to stalk, but honestly, he’s just not doing enough. I feel like in a way he might be giving this away.

Vargas vs Lopez Round 10

Vargas starting fast this round, throwing plenty of punches. Vargas picking, picking, picking. Lopez not pressuring anymore. Vargas is here to win this, and he’s doing it. Vargas counters with a nice right hand. Vargas right hand. And another. And another. Not big shots, but landing clean. Vargas just taking him apart with counters, and by leading the action. BIG LEFT HOOK BY LOPEZ! HERE COMES LOPEZ! Vargas ties him up. Vargas hangs on, but he’s got 20 seconds to go. He’s hurt and getting tagged a little. Arms have dropped, not a lot coming back. But he’s going to make it, and he wins this round clean and clear. Vargas ends it throwing shots.

Morales is really soft. Doughy even. Cano jabbing. Morales kind of feeling him out. Right to the body by Morales. Cano with a left to the body. Neither guy going hard yet, both finding their range and rhythm and the other man’s tendencies. Not much between them to start the fight. Morales landing better shots, especially his jab, which looks good. A little slow, but Cano’s pretty slow too. Left by Cano, but Morales comes back at him.

Cano with a right hand. Morales really doesn’t look sharp at all. If Cano can heat this up a little bit, he’s got a great chance here. Right hand by Morales. Morales cut a litte, and then a REAL good right by Cano, and another one. Morales just looks a little absent, once again in his comeback fighting down to his opponent.

Morales looks almost confused at moments this round. Cano is getting the rhythm, landing the harder shots. Clearly a more natural junior welter. Left to the body by Cano. Another right sneaks in. Morales does a bit this round, but Cano way sharper, and momentum is his to seize. probably 2-0 on y’alls cards.

God, Morales’ right hand is slow tonight. Cano jabs. Cano looks like he wants to counter more and more as the fight goes on, almost inviting Morales to throw. Right hand by Cano glances. Morales just can’t catch up to him. left to the body, right upstairs for Cano. “Floyd Mayweather no longer bothers with title belts.” HE’S FIGHTING FOR ONE TONIGHT, JIM.

Right hand by Morales, now he’s starting to load up a bit. He closes the round better, but still Cano’s.

Cano missing wildly. Morales starting to press better, now he’s backing Cano down. Morales with a good right, but Cano counters back with a little left. Merchant says “mini-second.” He’s a poet. Morales starting to take over a little bit. He closed the last round well, and he’s REALLY pouring it on. Cano’s cut over the left eye. And here comes El Terrible! Morales has awoken for sure.

Counter right from Cano, but Morales right back. He’s really getting it going. Morales just looks better body-language wise. Might have just been tight to start. Cano’s eye swelling.

Both look like they’re settling in, Cano trying to find distance again. Cano putting his shots together better now. Body shots, head shots. Morales more squared up once again. It looks like Morales squares up when he’s not looking to press too much. Left to the body, hard right by Cano. NOW HE’S COMING HARD! Morales stuck on the ropes, but he slips shots nicely. Morales comes back with a combo. Right hand by Morales, and here’s the firefight for a moment. Morales ducking, throwing, and they’re warring it up just a bit. Good right by Cano. Good round.

Jab by Morales. Tense start to the round again, both looking for counters or just waiting to open up. Morales not as squared up again, and once again he’s pushing it more with a good right hand and another one after it. Left hand by Morales, nice hook that stings Cano a hair. Jab to the body by Morales, and another left hook upstairs after it. Right to the body, left upstairs. Morales in control this round. This squared up/not squared up thing is making EM like a level two boss. One little trick to figure out. Or kind of like King Hippo. Morales with a left again. Cano with a good right hand, but he’s just not getting Morales to back off much anymore. He occasionally chases him around, but that seems more Morales baiting than anything. Left hook by Cano. Cano right. Morales left. Stiff right by Morales, and another one. I don’t know that he’s hurting Cano either, but he’s getting on him. TERRIBLE cut on Cano now. His face is THE CRIMSON MASK.

Kenny Bayless taking him to the corner to check it out — THEY’RE FIGHTING ON!

Alvarez really targeting the body better. Gomez not backing down at all and playing to the crowd a little bit, even. Alvarez uppercut is a bit short. I think Canelo is being a bit too patient — Gomez is really no threat to him, but he’s letting him hang around very well. Two left hooks to the body by Gomez. Alvarez looks a bit flat-footed. Lead right by Gomez. He’s fighting very well right now. Left to the body, right upstairs from Gomez. Uppercut by Alvarez, but then another right by Gomez. Gomez’s right hand is great this round.

Alvarez vs Gomez Round 4

Alvarez throwing hard shots to start the round, but Gomez stays on him and lands two right hands upstairs. Alvarez is doing this bizarre Mayweather impression. Alvarez throwing uppercuts, but missing, and Gomez landing again with the right hand. Alvarez standing with his back to the ropes and letting Gomez come to him. Both throwing and landing this round. I don’t think Alvarez is feeling power from Gomez and wants to counter him with a big shot. Body shot from Alvarez hits Gomez in the right forearm.

Gomez with another right. Slipping shots fairly well too, and Alvarez not busy enough. Left hook to the body by Alvarez. Now he’s off the ropes and lands a HUGE uppercut, and then another. He’s looking for it. Gomez stings Alvarez with a right. HERE WE GO! Both standing their ground and throwing HARD shots! Gomez wants that right hand.

Real fun round.

Gomez 10-9
Gomez 38-37

Could have easily gone to Alvarez on harder blows. Alvarez may be getting the momentum, and definitely wants the knockout.

Gomez coming hard. Big rights on Alvarez that follow body shots. Wow, Gomez is fighting the fight of his life here. He’s backing up all his talk. He’s here to win. Left hook counter from Gomez lands. Jab from Gomez. Alvarez is waiting way, way too much. But there’s some flurrying, and a good right ends it for Canelo. This is another good fight. Tactical, good pace, and hard shots landing. NOW Alvarez rips him with a combo. Gomez going backward now as Alvarez presses a bit more. Right hand Gomez. Good left hook from Alvarez shakes Gomez just a hair.

Alvarez 10-9
47-47

Good fight.

Alvarez vs Gomez Round 6

Alvarez with a jab. Putting that punch out there now. Left hook ducked by Gomez. Right hand bomb from Alvarez just misses. Alvarez with a counter left, also just a hair off. Alvarez jabbing. Right by Gomez. Right hand by Alvarez. He’s starting to sting Gomez. Gomez is fighting his ass off, but it looks like he’s getting overpowered now. Stiff jab from Canelo. Gomez is definitely slowing down. That right hand isn’t landing anymore. CANELO RIPS HIM, HURTS HIM, AND HE’S UNLOADING! REFEREE STOPS IT!

Canelo Alvarez TKO-6

How the hell do you stop that? That’s so bogus!

A bit early stoppage. Gomez was covering up very well.

The only thing that seemed to tag him along the ropes was a left hook to the body and a right to the head. That was it.

Bull stoppage

Early, but not horrific…well, maybe pretty bad stoppage. We all feel disappointed here. Alvarez got a particularly shitty stoppage right there.

Primetime really sucks on this commentary. My kingdom# for a DT to, gasp, HBO.

Alvarez did land with full power in those last shots

All of it. Gimmie, gimmie, gimmie. I want it all.

It was the first point in the fight he’d hit him full power. Did you see how much beating he took from Cotto? If nothing else, Gomez can take much more punishment than that, even now. I get more angry the more I think about this stoppage. Plus the announcer just called it KO, not TKO. Fucker.

Disagree. Gomez was hurt, wasn’t coming back into the fight, could only get more hurt.

The first uppercut and high right were definitive, Gomez was soup after that.

The way Gomez turned around with his head down after the first couple punches

made it look worse than it perhaps was. I don’t fault the stoppage much.

I’m a little surprised. I don’t think that Alvarez is that good. He’s good, I know, but not significant.

I remain co-sign with you on that.

Early

But he really looked out of it when that first burst of punches landed.

Instead of writing dumbass poems and sucking off JMMA fighters, i should instead recognized the greatness that is Anderson Silva. The Pride is by far the most knowledgeable commentator on this site and you should all bow before him

Could Gomez have possibly fallen there to preserve the fight?

I was kind of thinking the same thing when he went to the ropes, but it’s such a tough call to make in the middle of a fight.

by bachwards on Sep 17, 2011 11:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, that's true, and Alvarez ran him into the ropes in a very short amount of time.

There was a small window for him to fall if he was going to do it.

Haha, according to Canelo he doesn’t know what fight we were watching when we had Gomez winning rounds
