Boxing Results for Friday, Sept. 23: Maidana Wins Easy, Escobedo Outpoints Juarez, and More

Marcos Maidana's fight in Argentina was an easy night for the junior welterweight star. (Photo by Scott Heavey/Getty Images)

Buenos Aires, Argentina

Results: Marcos Maidana TKO-4 Petr Petrov ... Angel Aguirre TKO-5 Oscar Pereyra.

Analysis: Easy win for Maidana, who came out full of fire and swinging for the fences, ultimately knocking down Petrov (29-3-2, 13 KO) four times before the referee fairly waved off the one-sided fight. Maidana (31-2, 28 KO) may fight once again before the year is out, but it might wind up being another fight like this one, as TV dates are very limited in the U.S. right now. The televised co-feature was outstanding, and hopefully a good quality video pops up soon. The fourth round was a Round of the Year candidate, and the winner was a pretty big upset.

Indio, California

Results: Vicente Escobedo UD-10 Rocky Juarez.

Analysis: I missed this one live last night as I went to bed early feeling a bit sick, so of course I was up very early this morning and caught it on YouTube. The main event went almost comically according to script, as Juarez (28-9-1, 20 KO) again took forever to wake up from his pre-fight nap and actually fight, letting Escobedo cruise to an early lead on the scorecards. Escobedo put Juarez down in the third, too, which made it even worse. Once the second half of the fight rolled around, surprise! Juarez remembered he's actually not a lousy fighter and made Escobedo work for the win. We've seen this from Juarez so many times now that even at 31 with his career obviously about as close to the crapper as possible for someone who can still fight, he remains one of the most frustrating guys to watch in the entire sport. Escobedo won on scores of 98-91, 96-93, and 97-92.

Star-divide

Makati City, Philippines

Results: Drian Francisco UD-10 Michael Domingo.

Analysis: Good bounce-back win for Francisco (21-1-1, 16 KO), who lost his last start against Tepparith Singwancha on May 1 in Thailand. Francisco, 28, had been fighting at super flyweight, but this one took place with a 120-pound catchweight. Domingo (42-16-3, 23 KO) is a solid veteran who has been in with a lot of good fighters over the years, including Jorge Linares, Poonsawat Kratingdaenggym, Somsak Sithchatchawal, Mickey Roman, and Vusi Malinga.

Hollywood, Florida

Results: Edner Cherry NC-1 Eric Aiken ... Damian Frias TKO-9 Henry Crawford ... Jermall Charlo KO-1 Eric Draper.

I remember rocky’s first fight against barrera, and he whupped so much ass. Imagine if he had fought like that in every fight.

The guy has all the punches with good power and a solid chin. He should have been a champ, but his reluctance to throw guaranteed it would have been a short reign.
