Cotto vs Margarito Undercard: John Molina Wants Shot at Brandon Rios
Lightweight John Molina wants the December 3 crack at WBA lightweight titlist Brandon Rios, and tells Ryan Burton that he believes he'll be the one to get it:
"I am confident that Rios will take the fight. I don't know why he wouldn't take it."
Molina (23-1, 19 KO) is the No. 9 ranked contender by the WBA, and has won five straight after a 2009 decision loss to Martin Honorio. Like Rios, the 28-year-old Molina is an all-action fighter, and it would no doubt be a war for as long as the fight were to last. Rios (28-0-1, 21 KO) would of course be the heavy favorite, because he's proven himself against better fighters, and even with his leaky defense, I think it can be easily argued that among good fighters, Molina is even higher on the list of guys who have a blatant disregard for that side of the game.
It's a fight I'd totally approve of, really. I wouldn't give Molina much shot to win, but I probably wouldn't give many guys that could possibly land this fight a good shot to beat Brandon Rios, so why not at least get a guaranteed good fight? And I do believe that Rios vs Molina is a guaranteed good fight.

but I’m watching CNN right now, the special Latino in America 2: In Her Corner, and it just followed this girl, Marlen Esparza, into her spot on the US boxing team competing at London Olympics.
Pretty compelling stuff. You watch it Scott?

I watched it last week. I really enjoyed it, but couldn’t find a time to write about it.

Sell Molina short
He’s a good, tough action fighter, but let’s be real. He got smacked around by Martin Honorio, who I think is an underrated fighter, but who isn’t a top fighter by any means. His best win is probably Hank Lundy, a talented young fighter with some major flaws and a habit of fighting stupid.
It’s a good fight, and it should be a fun fight while it lasts, but I don’t see Molina as better than Acosta and Antillon, and Rios just wore those two down.
