Andre Berto vs Jan Zaveck: Live Round-by-Round Results
Tonight at 10:30 p.m. EDT from Biloxi, Mississippi, Andre Berto looks to get back in the winner's circle when he takes on Jan Zaveck. The twelve round welterweight clash will serve as the main-event of tonight's HBO show, with a 10-round featherweight match-up between Gary Russell Jr. and Leonilo Miranda serving as the appetizer.
Here's a quick look at the bout from Dave Oakes & Scott Christ:
Andrew Fruman will be handling round-by-round duties tonight.Berto should be able to out-box and out-speed Zaveck but I'm not sure whether or not he can stop the hardened Slovenian. I can see Berto winning a lopsided decision after twelve entertaining but one-sided rounds.
- Dave
I do think Andre will be way too fast for Zaveck, and I sort of envision this looking a bit like Arthur Abraham against Carl Froch. I don't think Zaveck will get stopped, but it wouldn't shock me. I'm looking at Berto by 117-111 type scores and thinking that's a strong bet.
- Scott

Round 1
Russell is pumping the jab out early. He`s the one edging forward, while Miranda circles away to the right. Russell has mainly just been working the jab, but fired a straight left, but he was short. He comes back with another 1-2, though also a little short with the straight left. Miranda has been strictly jabbing from long range. Nice combo from Russell. Came forward, and fires off a quick flurry. Russell is working the left more and more. Miranda just came forward with a 1-2, which Russell easily backed away from. Russell working the jab, and hooked off of it there.
TheBoxingBulletin.com
10-9 Russell Jr
Russell Jr is really fast. Miranda is not, though Miranda has a decent jab, and is trying really hard.

Boxing writer: "Iran, what are you going to do when you retire?"

Round 2
Harold has it 1-0 Russell, as I`m sure everyone else does as well. Russell working the jab, doubling and tripling up with it sometimes. Miranda tries to fire off a 1-2, but was blocked. Now Russell comes forward, fires a quick combo. Miranda tried to fire back, but Russell tagged him with a straight left along the ropes. Good shot there. Action moves back to the middle of the ring. Speed difference is BIG. Russell again comes forward with a little flurry. He puts his combos together very quickly. Miranda is short with a left. Miranda with a hook, that`s blocked. Russell looking very comfy on D. Now he comes forward, and bangs home a 1-2. Miranda is opening up a little more this round, but he`s not landing. Russell keeps working the jab. He comes forward behind a high guard, that`s fairly tight, and his shots are quick and compact. He just missed with a hook. Miranda with a 1-2, that`s blocked. Another pretty easy round for Russell.

Russell seems to be content to punch Miranda's lead glove most the time.

true true. with haymon in his corner i have no doubt.
i had the unfortunate luck to be at berto’s “fight” against freddy hernandez.
as i recall, berto got paid 950,000 and hernandez got like 50,000.
that was not a boxing match. it was sanctioned attempted murder. ok, i’m exaggerating, but that was not a fight that should’ve taken place.
Round 3
More of the same so far this round. Russell edging forward behind the jab. He`s mixing in the occasional hook, along with the 1-2s. Miranda is pretty much in retreat, taking few chances. Russell with a jab, and hook there. Russell with a jab, and a left. Occasionally Miranda throws his left, but he`s too slow to land it. He`s also flicking out the jab a little, and coming up short with that too. Russell is quite patient in his attack. He just landed a left, and followed with a 1-2. You get the feeling he could open up a lot more though. Miranda with a left that is blocked, and a hook that is blocked. Russell with a good jab. He blocks a 1-2. Another jab. Another easy, though not too thrilling round, for Russell.

Boxing writer: "Iran, what are you going to do when you retire?"

Round 4
Miranda`s corner trying to get him pumped up. We`ll see if it helps. Harold has it 3-0. That`s the only possible score. Russell comes forward, and works Miranda back into the corner. He`s firing away with some 1-2, mixing in some nice body work as well. Hooks too. A good 30 seconds or so of Russell popping away with Miranda in the corner. Didn`t do any major damage, but did some good work. Action in the middle of the ring now. Miranda tried to fire a left, but he`s short with it. Nice 1-2 from Russell. Now he has Miranda on the ropes, and he whacks him a couple shots. Miranda trying to fire back, before slipping away, as Russell follows. Russell opens up with a nice combo, landed a nice shot to the body among those. Miranda with a glancing left. Russell on cruise control, though he does occasionally put his foot on the pedal a bit. There`s the bell.

Round 5
We have quite the gulf in class here. Miranda is doing his best, but the speed difference is too much for him to cope with. He fires off a 1-2 to start the round, but it`s blocked. Miranda hustling here early. Russell calmly blocking, and now he`s stalking again. Russell slipping shots, as he slides forward. Sticking out the jab. He bangs a nice combo to the body, and then comes back upstairs and seemed to buzz Miranda there. Miranda went back into the ropes for a sec, but action now is back into the middle of the ring. Miranda with a little flurry, and hooks to the body. Not much in those shots though. Russell with a lead left. Miranda is moving forward a little more this round. Russell very calmly slipping shots though, before firing back with his own. Miranda digs a left to the body. Russell with a nice hook to the body. Also a hook upstairs. Miranda keeps pressing though. He`s come to fight here. Russell with a jab. Russell digs to the body. There`s the bell.

Round 6
5-0 on Harold`s card. Miranda stepping into a few body shots there. Russell gets his elbows down though, he sees them coming. Russell is stalking now, as Miranda circles away. Russell popping the jab out. Miranda is trying to work his offense, just coming up short. Now Russell explodes with a multi-punch combo. About 9 or 10 shots there, as Miranda backed away into the ropes. Miranda tries to fire back, but misses badly with a hook. He now tries to work the body, but Russell blocks it all. Russell takes turns either pushing forward, or going into counter punching mode. He seems comfortable leading and countering. Now he`s pushing forward behind the jab. He follows it up with a quick left. Miranda tries to respond, but he gets popped back for his efforts. Again Miranda steps in with a couple shots to the body, but they`re blocked and Russell fires back, and his shots land. Russell with a couple more punches before the bell. Good effort from Miranda, but this is quite one-sided.

Miranda circles away in the other direction, as Russell quickly follows. He digs a hook to the body. He flicks home a jab. Another nice jab. Miranda responds with a jab of his own. Russell whacks Miranda with a hook. Miranda is strictly on the defensive this round. Russell whacks him with a combo. Russell with a jab. Miranda with a couple jabs as he works his way off the ropes. Russell taking it easy here as the round ticks down.

Round 8
7-0 for Miranda. 3 minutes left. I`m glad this is only an 8-rounder, as there`s no sense in Miranda taking more punishment then he needs to. He`s gamely coming forward and trying to mix it. Digging to the body. Russell blocks, and counters. Miranda gamely marching forward here in the final round, though not having too much luck landing. He`s trying though. Russell with a 1-2. Russell with a left. Miranda opening up, but most of his shots are finding Russell`s gloves or air. Russell taking it easy so far this round. He`s landing, but not much fizz in his shots. About a minute left. He ducks and dodges and makes Miranda miss with a couple shots. Russell again playing D. Now he opens up with a 3-4 punch combo. Russell comes forward and lands a hard left hand. He follows up with another solid shot, and flurries for the last 7 or 8 seconds of the round. There`s the bell. This one is done.

"Boxing is dirty," said Casamayor. " The day I’m not ready to be a dirty fighter is the day I don’t fight anymore because it will mean that I have no heart for it anymore."

Why do announcers repeat fighter's last names?
Always wondered that.

It’s kind of old school—from when tech didn’t work so good, sometimes there weren’t even mics, so they gave the name twice to get it over.

I figured it was something like that.

Did Berto look dazed to anyone else? If things continue this way, even though it’s probably Berto 2-0, you can’t give the Haitian good odds of survival.
no, he did not look dazed to me personally

10-9 Zaveck, 29-28 Berto
Another close round, jeez. I thought Zaveck landed more clean shots, a lot of Berto’s shots were blocked or deflected.

I wish the HBO guys would talk about what Zaveck is doing. At all. It’s really fucking annoying, because flashy as Berto’s shots are, they’re getting largely blocked, and he is getting hit.
Also, again, Meldrick Taylor was 900x the fighter Berto has even dreamed being. Shut the fuck up.
meldrick could take both these guys to school in the same night

a close fight is not good news for zaveck

Berto is going to touch the canvas at some time in this fight
he’s getting hit clean, with some good counters.
Berto’s activity rate is probably winning him the rounds though.

I guess I can’t deny the damage in Zaveck’s face. I can deny Berto’s talent. He’s going to get killed in the ring one of these days with that defensive strategy. He’s a beltholder, not a champion.
I think Bailey could KO him early…

yes, I was thinking of that too. At least, too, it’s where it won’t look too bad even when he’s a porky old guy, as backs don’t wrinkle and sag as bad as fronts.

It is a bit odd that so much was made of the tattoos that he obviously did have put on a few months ago. They must have been temporary.
