Pacquiao vs Marquez: Roger Mayweather Expects Another Classic

Roger Mayweather believes that Manny Pacquiao vs Juan Manuel Marquez III will be another classic fight. (Photo by Scott Heavey/Getty Images)

You did not misread that headline. Seriously, Roger Mayweather expects a great fight that a lot of people buy on pay-per-view. Chris Robinson interviewed Roger, and got maybe the most laid-back series of Roger quotes ever, including this one:

"They fought two close fights the first time and I believe the fight will be close the third time. I can’t see him stopping Marquez. I can’t see nothing but another classic fight between the two and I don’t believe Marquez will get stopped," Roger continued.

Many have been critical of Pacquiao vs Marquez, and I've been somewhere in between the negative and the positive toward the fight (I'm a real Switzerland), but it does seem like the fight isn't being brushed off as a foregone conclusion by those in boxing. Whether that's sunny optimism from them (Roger Mayweather: Sunny Optimist?) or just the true belief that Marquez is the perfect Pacquiao rival (so far he has been) remains to be seen. I know this won't change many minds with those who just think the fight isn't going to be competitive at 144 pounds in the year 2011, but the thoughts are out there that Marquez will take Manny to the limit again, and they're not just from people who work for Top Rank.

Roger also addresses the Mayweather vs Pacquiao fight in pretty realistic terms (he calls it "the fans' fight"), so with Roger being sort of the voice of reason on "24/7" and now this, I'm pretty sure the apocalypse is near.

Well if Roger thinks it's going to be close

Then I must really not know shit about boxing.

I agree with Roger, and yes that scares me.

I do believe that of the four big fights coming up: PBF vs. Ortiz, Pacquiao vs. Marquez, Froch vs. Ward (smaller but still big), and (not quite as huge in the states but still really big) Vitali vs. Adamek—of these four, I do believe Pacquiao vs. Marquez has the most potential to be a really entertaining fight. So I guess I sort of agree with Roger too. Yikes!

Someone did not get the Mayweather family memo here. Jr. will have to have a talk.

Roy Jones had Bernard's number a time or so ago as well.

Marquez is alot older and alot heavier. We’ll see if he is accustomed to weight now but many people are rightfully skeptical. I hope its a great match, but I’m not counting on it.

Hey, I'll take it from here because you obviously don't know what you're doing... Lie down now, rest, and we'll talk about this when you regain your senses. --The Knockout Mechanism.

Imo, this just reads like Roger saying that Manny will struggle with the guy that his nephew beat easily.
It’s like the Mayweather’s will never give credit unless it also makes them look good.
What i mean is, Roger would never in a million years say, “Pacquiao will KO JMM this time because he is better than he was in the first two fights, plus he is more comfortable at the higher weight”, even though that is a real possibility. That would make Floyd look bad in their eyes because Floyd didn’t stop Marquez when they fought.
I may be reading too much into it but i always think there’s an ulterior motive whenever Floyd, Floyd Sr, or Roger are asked for their opinion on something that is either directly or indirectly related to them.
The only one of the boxing family who gives an honest, unbiased answer is Jeff Mayweather, IMO.

Yes, exactly.

Although I am surprised that Roger didn’t say something along the lines of “Marquez ain’t shit, Floyd whooped that ass, it don’t mean nothin’ if Manny wins, etc.”

I was actually thinking that too. I cant tell if he’s serious or making an underhanded comment.

Why wouldn't the fight be competitive a third time?

The only two reasons anyone could possibly come up with are :

1. The weight- It’s not nearly the factor it is being made out to be. You’ll have two guys who don’t have to struggle to make the weight, and they’ll be within a pound or two in the ring. Marquez is 145 for his lightweight defenses. Manny is like 147 at welter, so…

The fact that Manny may be a better welter in the sense that he is better equipped to deal with the bigger opponents is irrelevant because he’s fighting Marquez, a guy who he hasn’t really beaten yet, and those 147 lbers he beat weren’t on the same level as JMM in terms of fighting skills or style. He was never going to miss DLH, Hatton, Cotto, Clottey or Margarito.

JMM is no easy target, and his counter punching threat will keep Pac honest… again.

2. JMM’s age- this is a legit concern, but it would be a bigger deal if he was forced into making weight. He’ll be 100% of whatever he’s got. And let’s not forget, Manny has gone many rounds with the welters, all of whom touched him up. He’s no spring chicken either.

All that said, Manny could knock Marquez out. He’s almost done it twice. But if it happens, it will be because of the punch(es) he landed, not because of the weight number that will only be significant on paper. Is the fight more evened out if you force them to make lightweight since they both could? Of course not. That’s silly.

I’m of the opinion that both Floyd and Manny are going to look more vulnerable than they have in a long time in their upcoming fights.

I’m agreed. Particularly in terms of Floyd. I think Ortiz is going to give him one heck of a long night.

Did you see Marquez’s body against Mayweather? Flabby. His trainer even said the extra weight made him slow. I dont see how this time will be different. There is a huge difference between muscle mass and fat. Just looking at the weight in pounds and saying it’s no big deal because they will be 1 or 2 lbs difference is ignoring some pretty big factors.

It's hard to predict something without any reasoning...

I don’t see how FMJ can be vulnerable when he out boxes all of his previous opponents. The window that Ortiz has I think is in the first 2 rounds of the fight when FMJ feels out the other boxer. He was staggered by Hatton and Mosely and he went on to beat them later. Ortiz will have to come with something special to beat FMJ early.

Saying that, Manny has been caught plenty of times against slower boxers. I am worried for JMM tho, Manny does have more power than he did have in their previous 2 fights.
