Khan vs Peterson: IBF Releases Official Statement on Mustafa Ameen, the 'Mystery Man' in the Hat
The IBF has released an official statement this afternoon regarding the presence of Mustafa Ameen, perhaps still best known as the "mystery man" in the hat who continually approached ringside during the Amir Khan vs Lamont Peterson fight on December 10 in Washington, DC.
A couple of key points: The January 18 hearing is still on, and Ameen will attend to explain his actions. Ameen is not an IBF official, but does work with the sanctioning body. Here's the full release:
At this point in time the IBF has decided to break its silence and provide some clarification on the matter of Mr. Mustafa Ameen's presence at the IBF/WBA championship bout between Amir Khan and Lamont Peterson. Initially, the organization chose not to publicly address this matter to preserve the integrity of the hearing scheduled for the appeal filed by Golden Boy promotions on the ruling of the aforementioned bout. The sole purpose in doing so was with the intentions that all parties, and most importantly, the panelists could go into this hearing with clear minds and no preconceptions or prejudices.
Mr. Mustafa Ameen does outreach work for the IBF's SARB/Education Fund. This fund was initially created to financially assist retired professional boxers experiencing monetary difficulties. Shortly over a year ago, IBF President Daryl Peoples and Mr. Ameen agreed that he would network on behalf of the organization with the purpose of connecting with these fighters in order for the IBF to provide them with some financial assistance. Mr. Ameen's role with the organization is limited to just this. He is not an employee or an official of the organization, nor does he receive any monetary compensation from the organization for his efforts.
Previous to the Khan-Peterson bout, the IBF made a request for the Washington, D.C. Boxing and Wrestling Commission to extend Mr. Ameen the courtesy of a credential to enter the arena. Mr. Ameen was not assigned by the IBF to officiate this bout. Despite all that has transpired, at this point the IBF has not changed its stance and plans on moving forth with the hearing as scheduled on Wednesday, January 18, 2012. Mr. Ameen will be present at the hearing to explain his actions and what transpired during the bout between him and Mr. Welsh, the WBA supervisor.

As much as I’d like to ignore the conspiracy stuff, this is just weird. Why would someone who works with the IBF essentially on charity outreach be ringside at the fight talking with/passing notes with a working supervisor? And why did one of the scorecards have a 10-9 Khan round crossed out and changed to a 10-8 Peterson round after a point deduction?
I’m not ready (yet) to get completely suspicious, but I’d be lying if I said I won’t be paying close attention to BLH the day of the hearing for info.
It’s…become too much for me. I agree Khan and Schaefer come off far too whiny to like them in this situation, but the problem is they’re not wrong.

Its a little strange but Schaefer got to look at the scorecards before the scores were announced and they gave them the OK then. But now wait a sec, things look fishy. Ugh…

It’s an unfortunate paradox that the video shows something fishy going on, but Amir Khan still looks like a “complainer.”
What can you really do in a situation like that? Personally, if it wasn’t for the stink Golden Boy and Khan kicked up, I probably would have just said, “Well, the decision was close enough” and leave it at that.
As it is, the situation seems absurd.
That’s the thing for me at this point: Good enough and close enough to order a rematch. And it probably winds up being the fight that makes the most real sense for Lamont anyway, other than an easy title defense, and well, we give plenty of fighters guff for crap title defenses, and a lot of them had just as tough a road as Peterson to get a belt.
So I kind of wish everyone would just shut up and get on with it. Figure out if Lamont’s going to move up for Manny, and go from there.

IMO, there's really no real way to actually prove that Ameen influenced or tampered with the Judges in any way.
It does look suspicious but suspicions are suspicions. But real PROOF is real PROOF.
This whole thing will turn out to be a big bowl of nothing-cereal in the end.
The only way this will ever really be settled
…is to just have a rematch in a neutral city and to see who the better man is within the ring. Let’s get it on!!
Oh it’ll be neutral alright – Los Angeles, which is NOT where Golden Boy is based!
