Ricky Burns to Face Paulus Moses on March 10

Interim WBO lightweight titlist Ricky Burns has his opponent for his March 10 homecoming fight in Glasgow. The 28-year-old Scot will be facing former WBA titlist Paulus Moses, according to Fightnews.com.

Burns (33-2, 9 KO) has seen his star rise in a big way in the last couple of years, following an upset win at 130 pounds against Roman Martinez in September 2010 and a lightweight debut victory over Michael Katsidis in his last fight on November 5.

This is certainly a much better fight than, say, Cleverly vs Karpency, as Moses (28-1, 19 KO) is a legit fighter whose only loss came against Miguel Acosta via KO-6 in May 2010. Since that loss, he's gone 3-0 fighting at home in Namibia against mediocre opponents, but he's a solid fighter who shouldn't be considered a gimme for Burns.

There's no undercard firmly set for the show yet, but super bantamweight John Simpson (22-9, 9 KO) is also tentatively penciled in for a Scotland return on the bill.

I like this

I understand the idea of the ‘hometown fight’. It’s a chance to showcase the fighter for his hometown fans, and build up a fanbase that might travel to support you. But it shouldn’t be an excuse to fight bums. Moses isn’t a world beater, but he’s a top 20ish guy who was a former champion and has only lost to another good fighter. Burns’ people wouldn’t have made this fight if they weren’t pretty confident they could win, and look good doing it, but Moses is a live underdog.

Good fight

And I honestly have no idea how well Moses will do against this level of opponent.

Burns made me a fan with his win over Katsidis. Like Verklemptomaniac says, this is a good hometown fight kindof matchup, but after this I’d like to see him take on the other top British lightweight Kevin Mitchell and then move onto top fighters overseas.

Do you reckon he beats Mitchall then? Ham_napkin?

Boxing, for me, it's the beginning of all sports. I'm willing to bet that the first sport was a man against another man in a fight, so I think that's something innate in all of us.

Me too. Though I think Mitchell could beat Burns. A healthy motivated Mitchell could beat Burns. Hope it happens this year after Mitchell sorts his issues out. Failing that, a Burns v John Murray fight would be entertaining, though Murray needs a few wins at this point.

Nobody will read this and care and why should they?
