RingTV.com Report: Cotto-Alvarez in Negotiations for Possible Fight

According to RINGTV.com a possible clash between WBC junior middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Angel Cotto is in the works. Now the article doesn't go into detail but my guess is the fight, if it happens would ideally take place on May 5th. This is interesting considering that just last week Canelo was being named as a possible opponent for Floyd Mayweather on May 5th, but apparently Golden Boy and Top Rank must have realized that not only was this fight more plausible but this was a fight that many talked about for some time, or at least since Canelo won a major world title.

I like this fight (again if it happens and that's a megaton "IF") and I think it can do just as good in terms of PPV buys and overall attendance as a fight between Mayweather and Canelo or even Mayweather and Cotto. The May 5th dynamic coupled with the storied rivalry between Mexico and Puerto Rico makes this potential fight a win-win for both Golden Boy and Top Rank.

There is also the outside component of a possible UFC on Fox event taking place on May 5th as well. There's no doubt both boxing and mma would benefit from holding important matches on the same day, as we've seen with the UFC debuting on Fox back in November , the same night Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez had their controversial rubber match. Something like this really underscores the obvious conclusion that boxing and mma, particularly the UFC are in fact helping each other more so than hurting each other because while mma fans may bash our sport, there's no doubt they tune in whenever a good cracker is going on inside the squared circle. In short I like this fight better and if you have the UFC on Fox, Cotto/Alvarez, and Mayweather fighting all on the same night we're looking at possibly the most successful night in combat sports history in my view. I mean this is all speculation at this point but if it happens it could be huge for the sport.
