What was your favorite Brit dust up?

McPhilbin vs. Williams

A Dry Gulch at York Hall

"I know nothing about him, as far as I’m concerned he’s just an opponent for me to beat up, I’m the Champion and I’m gonna stay the Champion, I’m gonna look so good on TV as I beat him up, yeaaah."—Leon Williams

"It was fun to watch develop and it’s very easy to get caught up in the emotion, and I’m quite happy for McPhilbin because it was a great moment…this was great fun and it was nice to get caught up in someone’s moment."—Scott Christ (BLH)

"Having boxed so professionally through the entire fight, one moment of madness saw Williams docked a point as, in frustration; he attempted to throw McPhilbin through the ropes in the penultimate round."—Tommy Barber (OTB)

With just three weeks notice (following the withdrawal of Tony Conquest due to illness), unheralded Nottingham fighter Shane McPhilbin (8-2) met British cruiserweight champion Leon "Solid" Williams (9-4) in London on Jan. 13, 2012, in what many thought would be a mismatch and it was just that until very late in the fight. The challenger was decked once in round one and again in round six and the ending to the fight seemed preordained as the 26-year-old McPhilbin’s stamina clearly was in jeopardy.

Then it happened. Williams, the Lonsdale belt holder, began tiring in the 11th (though he had won every round), but in the 12th and final stanza, McPhilbin connected with a counter that decked and badly hurt Williams. The champ beat the count, but was met with a volley of shots culminated by an overhand right that again had him down. This time he was just barely able to beat the count. Shane moved in for the close with a combination of punches knocking the champion into the ropes and referee Marcus McDonnell halted the shocking assault at the 1:50 mark.

And there it was, McPhilbin had been knocked down twice, was far behind on the scorecards, but dropped Williams thrice in the final round to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat and give us what must be considered the Fight of the Year so far.

That’s mine, too, I believe. Moore-Rhodes was another great one. Jamie Moore was my kind of fighter, and turned out to be my kind of sensible human being when he looked inward and said, “You know what? I don’t have it anymore.”

One of mine as well. It was the quintessntial Brit Dust Up.

I also loved Eubank-Watson, but the tragic outcome makes it a sad memory.

Lewis-Bruno and the Eubank-Benn fights all had a special atmosphere which made the fights that much more awesome.

Recent Brit dust-ups that I particularly enjoyed include Mitchell-Murray, Cleverly-Bellew, a number of Jamie Moore fights, as well as undercard gems such as Renda-Samuels and Concepcion-Hammond.

Danny Williams v Mark Potter. Williams dislocated his shoulder, they’d sent Potter to ‘the land of nod’ with one arm. Marvellous!!

by Phill on Jan 17, 2012 7:54 PM EST reply actions

That’s one of the best finishes I’ve ever seen. If anyone out there hasn’t watched it, you gotta catch it. Williams’ shoulder was atrociously dislocated – his right arm was literally just hanging out at the most awful angle for six rounds – and he wasn’t able to defend or attack properly. The corner and referee were so close to stopping it and then out of nowhere, Williams lands an enormous uppercut from no where which cleaned Potter out. Brilliant stuff.

Not a top of the line favorite or anything, but this feels like as good a place as any to mention that I still believe the Sam Webb vs Prince Arron fight from last May went overlooked to a big degree. It was coming on the heels of all those great, great fights from April, and was a domestic-level fight with no real star power at all, so it just sort of fell by the wayside, but that was a really good fight. So good it made me think Prince Arron might get up to Euro level, which of course we recently found out is not going to be the case.

For a short, pretty one-sided fight, I loved Haye vs Maccarinelli. Actually this sounds kind of shitty of me but I love pretty much all Macca fights — for one thing I think he’s a terrific guy and a pretty good, crowd-pleasing fighter, but the big reason is with his chin, every single round is tense. Anything can happen with him.

by Scott Christ on Jan 18, 2012 6:16 AM EST reply actions

Webb-Arron was great, you’re right. I’d still like to see Sam Webb again, possibly down at welterweight, because he’s got a lot of skills and is, IMO, fundamentally a better fighter than the likes of Arron. A lack of punching power cost him at 154 – as well as a particularly hot arena which, together with his high work rate, wore Webb out after the first four rounds – but I think he could give some of our domestic fighters absolute shits at 147.

Webb will take a long time to recover from the Arron fight… He took a lot of punishment before the stoppage.

Still searching for an alive Dan Tucker.

by Dafs on Jan 18, 2012 11:36 AM EST up reply actions

Too true. That went on for far too long, really. Webb showed a huge heart, but one of those times when either the corner or referee has to consider whether it’s worth the fight going on. He was still loosely competitive in certain rounds, but that was entirely down to instinct and courage. His legs were gone from the first knockdown on.

Some of the older posters might know about this but i have always wondered why Herol “Bomber” Graham never fought the likes of Benn, Eubank and Watson.
Am i right in saying that they avoided Graham, a guy who could make fighter’s miss and look average?
It would have been great to have seen Graham vs any of them three, or Steve Collins, but the one that stands out most for me would have been Graham vs. Watson.
That would have been a highly skilled technical battle between two craftsmen, i think.
As we know “Bomber” is regularly referred to as the best British fighter never to win a world title.
He gave the great Mike McCallum all he could handle in losing by SD and was outboxing Julian Jackson until Jackson lowered the boom on him.
One of Yorkshire’s best ever, “Bomber” was, and one of the first off the Ingle’s Wincobank Gym production line.
I wish i could get more of his fights on dvd cos i was a bit too young to remember him in his prime.
BTW i saw Michael Watson vs Mike McCallum on ESPN a few weeks ago. What fight that was. Watson too gave McCallum a good fight but eventually lost in the 11th rd.

I can’t think of another fight where I went from happy to sad so quickly. Herol boxing the face off Jackson one second and then Herol looking at the face of Jesus just after eating that right hand is something that will live with me for ever.

Matt..

There was a story that they (Brendan Ingle and co) used to place a napkin on the ground, Herol would stand on it and they would challenge anyone to land a punch on him, apparently they couldn’t. Oh, and Herol never took his feet off the napkin. Maybe you can verify that.

by Phill on Jan 23, 2012 3:15 PM EST up reply actions

Not at the moment but about an hour ago i just ordered his book off amazon so i will find out. :)
He had some great reflexes for sure, and could hit hard too.
He was like the precursor to Naz, imo. Not quite as effective but still an original and one of the best to come out of the Wincobank gym.

by Matt Mosley on Jan 23, 2012 3:20 PM EST up reply actions

Just looking at his boxrec page and, if they have it right, he is listed as having a 77" reach. That’s a long reach for a middleweight. Ali’s was about 81" by comparison and most middleweight are about 72" or so.
Add that to the fact that he was a southpaw and a slippery, awkward type and you can see why he was avoided.

I know what you mean. It’s one of them styles that can rub people the wrong way but i think it’s been refined a bit in recent years, probably through brendan’s son Dominic taking the reins more now. I think Kell brook is a good example of this, where he’s less hands-down-posing and more about getting the job done and showing good technique.
Some of them used to wear some questionable shorts/skirts, that’s for sure, prancing around like fairies half the time, especially Nelson, who looked terrified of getting it. :)

by Matt Mosley on Jan 23, 2012 4:00 PM EST up reply actions

:)

by Matt Mosley on Jan 23, 2012 4:13 PM EST up reply actions

Kell Brook also left the Ingles for a few years and went with Dave Coldwell so maybe that’s partly why he’s got a more traditional style than a lot of the previous Ingle fighter’s.

by Matt Mosley on Jan 23, 2012 4:17 PM EST up reply actions

Christ – you know how to push my buttons :-)
JW flustrated me beyond words as did Nelson. This " I’ve just got to knock you out with a huge , clean , flashy , single punch" shite drives me insane. OK if your Roy Jones not so ok if your a little less gifted.
Round after round of a jab now and again , lots of running around then a huge single uppercut often made me think " I could fooking do that"
Not for me – even though both Johnny and Witter did spark ’em now and again!

I think he could end up being a real good un Matt mate. His 26-0 isn’t exactly filled with names so he needs to push on now and step it up . I expect him to put a hurt on Hatton then hope he tips his toe in the deep end , see if he can hang with the big boys – it’ll be fun finding out if he can .

of Graham vs McCallum, Jackson, Charles Brewer and Vinny Paz.
Look for Nigel Benn admitting at the end that he avoided Graham, and Paul Dempsey (the host) also states that Eubank admitted to not wanting to fight Graham.

Very sorry to hear of the death of former British and Commonwealth welterweight champion Brian Curvis, a man who beat Dave Charnley and went 15 rounds with Emile Griffith for the WBC and WBA world welterweight titles:

Curiously, The Prince did not have any as he fought outsidse of the UK and also KO’d most of his Brit oppoenets early in the fights. He was pretty dominant except for one fight. He was pretty damn special.

He was pretty annoying also.
I was there when he took apart Steve Robinson in Cardiff.
It was always gonna end that way but man it hurt that the clown prince beat our SteveO.
Just made me dislike him even more.
Hamed looked world class against ordinary foes but against a true world class operator he looked lost.
Naz had great power , speed and some crazy moves but I’d never put him in the same class as Morales , Marco , Marquez et al. They are special , Naz was semi-special imo.

I totally agree Sir Jack D., and not just because i didn’t like Hamed the ‘personality’.
I think what you said there is bang on. He had his limitations, wasn’t well schooled in the fundamentals, and therefore got exposed by MAB.

Yeah Matt mate .
A big banger with zero plan B = fooked at the very highest level.
I was a little gutted when he retired(faded out with that awful comeback fight) …but only cos I wanted to see Morales stop him …which he would have no doubt. Jesus , the Morales now would have beaten a prime Naz imo.

Gary Sykes has been in a few good domestic fights:

vs Carl Johanesson (British super featherweight title)
vs. Andy Morris (British title eliminator)
vs Anthony Crolla

Crolla has also been in some good ones:

vs John Watson (British lightweight title)
vs. Andy Morris (English super featherweight title.

I think it would be good to see Crolla and Sykes rematch at some point, although Crolla might have bigger fish to fry now, even though he lost the first fight.
I’m a Sykes supporter but i think i would be picking Crolla in the rematch.
I reckon it would be another good fight between two guys with good engines who don’t like to back down.

Would anyone give Mitchell a chance against Bam Bam Rios?

In his fight against Murray (Just watched it again) he showed some exemplary defensive skills, but early on he was very prone to getting hit by the right hand.

I think if Mitchell were to fight the fight of his life, he could give Rios fits, but he lacks the concentration IMO

by Sweet science on Jan 23, 2012 4:18 PM EST up reply actions

I think he has them very sound technical skills and punches hard for someone small for the weight, but i just think Rios would be too big and strong for him.
As you mentioned Mitchell was getting caught regularly early on by Murray and Murray was posssiby ahead at time of stoppage IIRC. He started to fade when he got cut.
I think Mitchell would gove Rios some trouble and i would like to see it, but i wouldn’t pick him to win.
Saying that, i didn’t pick him to beat Murray either. :)
I know Mitchell wasn’t at his best mentally for Katsidis, but of MK can do that to him, i’ve got to think Rios can kind of wlak him down too.

by Matt Mosley on Jan 23, 2012 4:22 PM EST up reply actions

I’d like to think he could do it, bt hs personal life seems to have momentarily jolted his boxing life. If he’s back for good, who knows? I’d put a few quid on him.

by Phill on Jan 23, 2012 4:26 PM EST up reply actions

but i just think Rios would be too big and strong for him.

Murray looked tiny against Rios, but massive against Mitchell. I think that would be the telling difference. KM would have to stay right the hell away from Rios because his uppercuts are lethal. He does move his feet well though.

As Phil says below, I think it would be worth sticking a score on him, coz the odds would be favourouble…. I wouldn’t risk my Pick’m though :)

by Sweet science on Jan 23, 2012 4:29 PM EST up reply actions

I think Mitchell is really no bigger than a super featherweight and is fighting men naturally bigger than him at 135.

I think his cutman, Mick Williamson, had a lot to do with him suffering less bloodyness.
I might be wrong but i think he also had some kind of surgery, maybe even pastic surgery, around his eyebrows to stop him cutting so easily.

Sir jack, i asked you further up but you must have missed it; what do you think of Kell Brook?
He’s an Ingle fighter but not quite in the same mould. He has more to him, imo, better technique to go with his power and reflexes.
He’s still got a way to go but he doesn’t seem to be getting too cocky and is being brought along carefully (a bit too carefully up until lately, imo).
His next fight with Matt Hatton could be a decent Brit dust up, if a bit one sided in Brook’s favour, IMO!

And Mike Jones

He would be a good opponent this year some time.
Brook is 26-0 (18), Jones 26-0 (19). Brook is 25, Jones is 28, both nearing their prime.
I’m not sure how good Jones actually is and i think Brook beats him, but i would def like to see it.
Jones is pretty tall for the weight at 6’ and could be a bit awkward for Brook, imo, mainly because of the height. I would like to see it. Another UK vs USA fight.

He seems like a good lad Matt. I always get the impression he’s always concentrating like mad when he’s fighting, he looks transfixed by his opponent. Am I a bit unfair though, when I say his progress seems somewhat, slow? Not a criticism, just an observation.

by Phill on Jan 23, 2012 5:04 PM EST reply actions

No, i think he’s being moved a bit too slow personally.
Eddie hearn keeps talking about being careful, but in my opinion, you’ve got to make the jump at some point, and brook is heading for his prime fight now.
He needs a title fight asap, imo.
I do think the Hatton fight ios a good idea though. It’s not exactly a step up but it’s gonna create interest in the UK and get Brook’s name spread more and make him a few quid.
He nedds to make the move after this though, needs letting of the leash.
I’m not sure that i would say his actual progress as a figther is slow, it’s more those who are promoting him, imo.
I think he’s coming alonmg nicely as a fighter but they aren’t giving him big enough challenges, imo.

by Matt Mosley on Jan 23, 2012 5:19 PM EST up reply actions

he’s always concentrating like mad

I think that can only be a good thing for a fighter. One lapse of concentration and you can get caught and put away.

Too right, SJD.
Rarely has one boxer got so far on guts alone. Fair play to carl but lets be honest; he couldn’t even do the basic right. All that talk of him beating Calzaghe was a joke.
Joe would have won almost every round, i’m sure.
I would have loved to have seen Calzaghe vs Ward, btw.
Or what about RJJ vs Ward in their primes?
RJJ, Ward and Calzaghe are the best 168ers ever, imo.
\bute may have a shout in a year or so if he fights a legit contender.

by Matt Mosley on Jan 25, 2012 1:46 PM EST up reply actions

Calzaghe / Jones prime ( both because Calzaghes hands were fooked years before he got his ass on a plane) would have been very interesting . Could have been a fight to remember that one.
Froch / Calzaghe would have played out like Lacy / Cazaghe( in my humble o) except Jeff had a half tidy defense !
It’s still unclear to me how good Ward really is – he’s obviously very good and looked like a great against Froch but hey , Brian Magee looked great against Carl at times ( except when he’s was getting knocked over/out).

Froch is the ultimate " how the fook did he win that" fighter for me. I don’t just mean how the fight went , I mean in a general way i.e. because he just looks so fucking clumbsy . Give the guy his due , he’s got a million miles further than his talent should have taken him . I’m not slagging him you understand , just stating the obvious. The guys got lots of attributes .

by Sir Jack Daniels on Jan 25, 2012 4:24 PM EST up reply actions

Maybe i was being a bit harsh on Froch. along with his guts he’s akso one of the toughest fighters out there and he has a certain amount of skill.
But he’s sooo slow. That’s his main downfall, imo, especially when he comes up against a speedy fighter or a slickster.
His accuracy is bad too and he has trouble connecting cleanly with his shots even in a toe to toe brawl, like he had with Kessler and Pascal.
He comes to fight though, and in that sense he’s a bit of a throwback, imo.

I bought a boxing book (there’s a surprise) by Teddy Atlas and Bert Sugar called “The Ultimate Book of Boxing Lists” recently and although at first i wasn’t overly impressed, the more i have looked at it the more interesting it has become.
Say what you want about Sugar (and i’m sure Ted will :) but he has a vast knowledge of watching the sport over decades and decades (as Ted does) and can bring up some names that i have never heard of before (like Sid Terris or Harry Jeffra).
It’s just a reference book full of short chapters with titles like “Best Left Hooks” and “Greatest Southpaws”, but i have found it very interesting and very easy just to pick up and have a look at now and again.
Bert and Teddy both rank their best fighters, by division, in the last chapter, and also their best P4P.
My point here is that i didn’t agree with either of their 168lbs Top 5 lists.
Personally, i would have gone:
1/ RJJ
2/ Joe Calzaghe
3/ Andre Ward
4/ Nigel Benn
5/ Chris Eubank

Bert goes:
1/ Joe Calzaghe
2/ Graciano Rochigiani
3/ Sven Ottke
4/ RJJ
5/ Nigel Benn

Teddy goes:
1/ Sven Ottke!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2/ Joe Calzaghe
3/ Nigel Benn
4/ Chong-Pal Park
5/ RJJ (SO LOW??)

My main gripe here is Teddy ranking Roy so low. In my mind the RJJ who fought at 168 and trounced an admittedly drained James Toney was the best Roy ever, and no doubt one of the best fighters of his generation.
I realise Roy wasn’t at 168 as long as Joe or Ottke, but he just looked so unbeatable then, at his peak, and personally i think that counts for as much as achievements and longevity.
I know Teddy comes up with some strange observations now and again, but to put Sven Ottke at no.1 and Roy at no.5 is just too ridiculous for words, and totally wrong, imo.
I could understand people putting Joe, or even a still young Ward at no.1, but not Ottke.
Please not Ottke.

Teddy was on drugs when he made his list. He’s put Das Panthom in at 1 insead of 101 ! Fook me .

So do I

Take your list Matt and throw in Ottke ( just ‘cos I’d like to see all the others maul him) and that would be a real super 6 eh? I would swim an ocean , climb a mountain and give up drinking for a whole day to see Nigel Benn / Sven Ottke.

I know waht you mean, i would have liked to have seen Ottke in the mix just in the hope that he would come in last after getting KO’d by whoever he was drawn agaisnt.
i have to say though that thinking abiout it now, i would rather see James Toney in with them guys.
Would have loved to have seen both RJ and Toney against Benn, Eubank, Collins and Watson.

Does anyone remember Jonny Armour? He was a blood and guts fighter. Apparently he was a milkman, who after doing his round, used to have to get two buses to travel to his gym to train. He had a trilogy with Francus Ampofo, winning all three.
Here’s a bit of what he was about. Hope the link works.

I remember Armour, and the Ampofo fights. Those fights were around the year 2000 weren’t they?
That was around the time i was starting to follow boxing closely.
Yeah Johnny was always up for a toe to toe brawl.

by Matt Mosley on Jan 26, 2012 4:46 AM EST up reply actions

Good call for Armour – Ampofo as a Brit Dust up too because, although Ampofo was born in Ghana, he was based in the UK for quite a long time. He probably still lives here.

Yes, early 2000s. Good hard working, yet relatively unknown fighters. I think you’re right re Amoofo living here. Sheffield way, I think.
Good to see Ted’s heard of them too. (though I’m not surprised).

Ampofo wtf… amoofo?? Sounds like a gangster cow!!

I will back him up on this. It was a very good fight between two relative novices.
Ochieng was 8-1 going in, Quigley 10-1.
I was quite impressed with the winner.

by Matt Mosley on Jan 29, 2012 9:25 AM EST up reply actions

I should have said i was impressed with both the winner’s skills and the loser’s toughness/courage.

by Matt Mosley on Jan 29, 2012 9:27 AM EST up reply actions

Quigley didn't stop coming forward

Pumping out the punches

Ochieng was doing his own version of the rope a dope almost. Showed good defensive skills and then countering his man.with good sharp hooks, wearing him down.
