Fights that will probably never happen

Mayweather and Pacquiao have taken centre stage in the discussion of important fights that will probably never happen. However, Scott's article about Rigondeaux and Donaire and Garcia's comments afterwards have led me to believe that this is another great fight that we will probably never see.

We have discussed many important fights that did not happen in the past, but can you take out your magic 8 balls and see which fights turn up this:

I'm also curious to see which rising stars you think will avoid the best or most intriguing match up, either because of promoter conflicts or because they will protect and pad their records as much possible.

You mean against each other or just in each of their careers? Either way, I can see that.

In their careers.

Tyson Fury David Price

Probably will happen but with Boxing you never know

by Sweet science on Jan 24, 2012 10:30 AM EST reply actions

I reckon that’ll happen. Fury’s a fighting man – can’t see him avoiding Price at all. Moreover, Mick Hennessey will do just as Fury bids him: he’s his last remaining prominent fighter and Hennessey will be doing everything possible to stop Fury heading down the Froch route.

Yeah to be fair im pretty sure it will happen

Fury, as you say, has a pretty big set of bollocks on him. But there is still a little nagging thought in my head that somehow it will get prevented somehow

by Sweet science on Jan 24, 2012 6:12 PM EST up reply actions

I do worry that Price has already mildly hinted that maybe it won’t happen. That leads me to believe there’s more hesitation from Price/Maloney than from Fury/Hennessy.

Yeah – if it doesn’t happen, I’m pretty positive it’ll be down to the Price/Maloney side of things. Fury just isn’t the type to duck out of a fight.

Dont hold your breathe

On Klitscho vs Klitscho.

I wouldn’t fight my brother either.

I do wonder whats holding up Chavez vs Martinez though.

I actually think Chavez would give him a good fight.

I would hold off on Broner vs Russell. I would allow them to build their names and become more household names. I think that would be a terrific fight…. Let it sit about 2-3 years.

Everybody's pretty friendly

with Broner and Russell. And both managed by Al Haymon. Not likely to happen.

Wear something sexy to my funeral.

Do we really have to answer that? You know perfectly well what’s holding up Chavez vs. Martinez.

by Apprentice on Jan 24, 2012 5:49 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t care if Broner and Russell fight each other. I care that they don’t take the Andre Berto version of the Haymon route and fight these weak ass showcases forever.

Chris John vs. Lopez, Gamboa or Donaire.

by Apprentice on Jan 24, 2012 11:15 AM EST reply actions

Any fight that really should happen......

that makes sense for it to happen…..
where both fighters are in their prime…..
and the fans (especially the hardcore fans) are crying out for it…..
probably won’t happen…..at least not when we really want it most
This is boxing after all.
Do we know for a fact that Bute and Ward will not find some way to avoid each other long term, untill they have run out of all other options.

This is a depressing way of looking at the sport, but empirical evidence tells us that you’re right.

Ismail Silaykh

could have trouble getting the big fights, imo,
No one at 175 will want to fight him.

Donaire-Gamboa. Because Top Rank can’t help but put another coat of marinade on it.

They haven’t even properly started yet… They’ve only taken the frozen meat out of the refrigerator, but they haven’t started cooking it, much less marinating it haha

David Haye vs anyone not named Klitschko

Although we all think fights with Tomasz Adamek or Chris Arreola would be great, they aren’t happening.

"Occasionally, there is a boxing match that, in its demonstration of skill, courage, intelligence, hope, seems to redeem the sport - almost. Perhaps boxing has always been a sport in crisis, a sport of crisis."

by Oli Goldstein on Jan 24, 2012 2:15 PM EST reply actions

Frankly, that’s a dude I’ll never miss. I mean, would I watch him fight against Arreola and Adamek? Yes. Am I lamenting myself because it’s not going to happen? Not really. I just don’t like David Haye at all. But, your point is valid; those are fights that people would probably want to watch.

by Apprentice on Jan 24, 2012 2:30 PM EST up reply actions

At this point I am not interested in seeing Haye fight anybody whatsoever, not even Adamek or Arreola. I am just desperate that the David Haye “newsbits” refuse to disappear from the boxing media. I cannot believe people are still writing / talking about David Haye. Every time I see a David Haye article I close the page and move to some other sport’s website.
This is like Sven Ottke articles suddenly starting to surface everywhere telling us of different fighters he will NOT be currently fighting because they suck.

And while im on it,

Ward and Bute don’t look like they are on a collision course either

by Sweet science on Jan 24, 2012 6:14 PM EST up reply actions

I’d like to see that fight.

by Apprentice on Jan 24, 2012 9:25 PM EST up reply actions

We already saw Bute vs Johnson. Ward vs Dirrell will be the same thing when it never happens.

1) This has every chance of happening
2) I am not sure either fighter is in their prime anymore
3) Personally, I am not really interested in that fight anymore.

As a big Pirog fan, I would love to see him against anybody at the top of the division, but I am afraid fights like Pirog – Martinez, Pirog – Sturm or Pirog – N’Jikam will never happen. I am still holding vague hope that a Pirog – Macklin fight can be made after Martinez – Macklin

by Radu on Jan 25, 2012 4:45 AM EST reply actions

Other fights I would like to see that will probably never happen:

Toshiaki Nishioka – Yuriorkis Gamboa / JM Lopez / Anselmo Moreno

Zaveck – Ortiz (or at least a Berto rematch)

Uchiyama – Gamboa

Brandon Rios – Robert Guerrero

Vic Darchinyan – Hernan Marquez / Luis Concepcion

JC Chavez Jr – Gennady Golovkin

Kazuto Ioka – Roman Gonzales / Nkosinathi Joyi

Saul Alvarez – Erislandy Lara

by Radu on Jan 25, 2012 5:06 AM EST reply actions

Lot of good matchups there! Who promotes Lara?

by Apprentice on Jan 25, 2012 11:21 AM EST up reply actions

Might as well add Uchiyama-Broner to that list.

That fight won’t happen either.

I want to see Martinez-Margarito II. This is the least likely fight in the world at this juncture seeing as it’s unsellable and Sergio would more than likely maim margarito. I’d still like to see it for some strange, deeply visceral reason.

by Joe Landry on Jan 26, 2012 1:16 AM EST reply actions

Wow!

First of all, come on, that’s not a fight, it’s not even a mismatch, it’s just public sadism. There’s no need for that, Martinez does not need to avenge his loss to Margarito to prove he is the better fighter at this point. It’s like you remembering a girl beat you in the schoolyard when you were five, seeking her out and beating her up really badly just to prove you are stronger now. People should not be asking for that rematch "just to set things straight". It’s pretty obvious where things stand right now.
Second of all, I wouldn’t say the fight has no chance of happening, Arum will try to sell Margarito’s corpse for public defiling at least two more times, so the highest bidder in and around that weight class has every chance of landing a fight, unless he is with Golden Boy. Who are the biggest money-fighters around that weight-class? First of all JC Chavez Jr, and the second one could be argued is Martinez. Maybe Sturm? Maybe Berto? And a Margarito – Martinez fight might sell because of … welll… for instance YOU’d see it, right?
But why that is, I’ll never understand, it’s not like it isn’t 100% obvious what will happen.
