Fight ending punches, who has them?
First thing, If I'm going over old ground here, I apologise.
But, as I watched Carl Frampton v Kris Hughes earlier today, it got me thinking about the way this fight ended. The Sky team were just beginning to suggest that Frampton should apply more pressure or up his game, then.... Boom! 'that" punched landed. That one single shot ended the fight, it was a fight altering punch or in fact, a fight ending punch. So, fellow BLHers, who else had that single one punch which altered or ended a fight?

Past or Present or both?
Nigel Benn from the past, i mention him alot but he could be getting absoluteely battered and one punch from him ends his opponent
Currently, i honestly can’t think of anyone lol
No particular order
Lucien Bute, uppercut to the body.
Randall Bailey’s “big right hand.”
Vitali Klitschko,
Marcos Maidana,
James Kirkland
BamBam Rios
either Marquez
Manny Pacquaio
There is no safety in numbers, or in anything else--James Thurber, 1939
I actually think Wladimir Klitschko has more one-punch knockout power than Vitali these days.

I’m not so well versed in his fights, but Sergio Martinez looks like a guy that can perform knockouts at will, as long as something gives him the reason he has to. Gets a point deduction, scores a knockdown, gets knocked down, scores a knocked down, gets robbed on the scorecards, rematch for a lights out K.O.

G’Day Phil , Ted , everybody. I’ve been some holiday time so I havent been online for a month . Glad to be back :) Bob Foster at 175 , Arguello at 126 – 135 , Julian Jackson at 160 , Thomas Hearns at 147 – 154 and a young Tyson at heavyweight are a few that pop straight into my tiny mind. Danny Lopez at featherweight , Olivares at bantam and to chuck an old school Welsh gun in Jimmy Wilde gets a gig . Cheers all . All these blokes were very good if not great fighters( except Jackson ) as well as being one punch kayo artists. Duran was always a great puncher with his right hand . He kayoed many a lightweight with one punch and hurt blokes like Barkley , Leonard and Davey Moore who were bigger fighters . Cheers mate , hope alls well for ya .
Mr 45 - Great to see you back mate
…and what a return ….Jimmy Wilde , that’s going back a bit. Great pick though . “The Ghost with a hammer in his hand” a little long but very apt name.
I think Ted watched Jimmy fight when he went to the States in the 20’s . Hehehe.

"The Ghost with a hammer in his hand"
Great nickname. Also known as the “The Mighty Atom”.
Regularly referred to as Britain’s greatest ever fighter, and one of the P4P hardest punchers of all time.
Great stuff JC40 and SJD.
Also “The Tylorstown Terror”. 3 decent nicknames , all fitting.

Acelino Freitas. In that fight against Barrios, I seem to remember him landing one punch which literally turned the fight on it’s head.
And then Diego laid him out with a huge right hand that turned certain loss into a victory, forcing Freitas to quit a less than a round later

Yeah, but Freitas was the harder puncher.

Hey Matt.. I was desperate for Naz to meet Freitas. It should have happened 2000/2001. I reckon that would have been a right old ding dong, what do you think?
I see where you are coming from with the power both had but i just think Freitas would have been too big and tall for him. Freitas was a super feather/lightweight, Naz was a career featherweight.
But you never know, Naz might have made him miss plenty and countered him.
My money would have been on Freitas though.
"Leon Spinks is so ugly that when a tear rolls down his face, it only gets halfway, then it rolls back up" - Muhammad Ali.
Not that Freitas was all that tall, but he was taller than Naz.
Now i think more about it though, there was only 4lbs between them at that time.
Good call. Would have been interesting i think.

I know he has only done it at a certain level, but i believe Kell Brook, when his timing is bang on, can end a fight weith one punch. He has done so at British title level, and i think he will carry it up in with him as he progresses and develops.
Kell is a good pick. He can dig that boy.

Talking of Ingle Fighter's
there’s one on Channel 5 on the 18th of this month. Kid Galahad he’s called and he’s fighting Jason Booth. I saw Galahad in one of his recent fights and i was quite impressed, although he’s only been at a certain level. He’s undefeated though inexperienced at 10-0 (4). I would pick him to beat Booth though who is obvioulsy close to the end now.
Chris Eubank Jr is also on that card.
Here’s an article on the latest Ingle prospects:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/boxing/8315420.stm
"Leon Spinks is so ugly that when a tear rolls down his face, it only gets halfway, then it rolls back up" - Muhammad Ali.
Sorry, Sheffield boxers, not just Ingle’s.

Sweet
Liked the look of Eubank when he fought on Fury’s last undercard.
Agree on the Booth fight. Quigg isa different gravy to Kid Galahad but I don’t like the way Quigg stole his heart early on.

I was thinking about this in relation to Quigg – Frampton the other day.
I’m not saying that Frampton won’t catch up with Quigg, ability wise, once he gets more fights under his belt, but i think the main factor in Quigg’s favour is that he looks bigger and stronger than Frampton, as well as just better.
Frampton, like Booth, looks too small to be at 122, imo. He looks like a bantamweight to me.
According to Boxrec Frampton is only 5’5" with a 62" reach.
Quigg’s reach is not listed, but his height is there at 5’ 8".
The first time Frampton suffers a loss, be it against Quigg or whoever, i think he should drop down to 118.
Like i said, i really think that’s where he belongs now, while still a young man.
"Leon Spinks is so ugly that when a tear rolls down his face, it only gets halfway, then it rolls back up" - Muhammad Ali.
I still like the look of Frampton
I didn’t realise that he is about 10 fights behind Quigg in terms of experience though. But you are right, he certainly does look small……. We’l see.
by Sweet science on Feb 3, 2012 10:23 PM EST up reply actions
Frampton also has a pretty good amateur pedigree that Quigg does not have, so maybe the distance between them is not as far as the records suggest.
"Leon Spinks is so ugly that when a tear rolls down his face, it only gets halfway, then it rolls back up" - Muhammad Ali.
Ola Afalobi
has turned the lights out a few times. He is another who can bang, often on the counter, when he times them right.
I realise that his record doesn’t really suggest this and that he has only done it at certain times, but the ones he landed on both Enzo Mac and Terry Dunstan were beauts.
The Dunstan KO was picture perfect
The mouthpiece flying out…… Just a freakin great shot
Good pick is Ola

Earnie Shavers
as an all timer. I see Ted already mentioned him.
BTW i saw an article the other day about fights that should have happened and one listed was Shavers vs George Foreman.
I can’t think of a bigger clash of the tians when it comes to KO punchers.
I’ll add the contemporary German buddies once again:
Marco Huck can destroy with a well-placed single right (at least at cruiserweight)
Arthur Abraham is an expert at it (if he manages to let a hand go)
Historically, you shouldn’t forget about Rocky Marciano (ask Joe Jersey Walcott about the most beautiful one-punch-knockout ever)
"Sure, there have been injuries and deaths in boxing – but none of them serious." Alan Minter
Marciano’s KO of Wolcott was awesome, of course, but I think Joe’s icing of Ezzard Charles was even more amazing. Pretty incredible that he’s on both the victor and victim ends of this list.
And Walcot's famous left hook waxing of Charles was incredible
Of course my favorite one punch bomber was Bob Satterfield, the miost exciting fighter I have ever seen in over 60 years of watching. He could knock you out with a miss.
"I wish people would love everybody else the way they love me. It would be a better world."

First thoughts
Some" nows" would be Pac , Floyd ,Froch
The" not- so- nows" – Naseem Hamed , Tito , Corrales , Roy could slap when he wanted to also.
The oldies – Shavers , Foreman , Tyson , Lewis , Bowe , hell , it seems as if all the old time heavies could bang ! Throw in Ezra Sellars also. He could bang a bit old Ezra.

Ted will have heard 2 of these 3
but only know of one:
George Chuvalo is well known for having one of the, if not the greatest chins of all time.
He names the three hardest punchers he ever faced as:
3/ Mel Turbow
2/ George Foreman
1/ Joey DeJohn
Now i think about it i think i have heard De John’s name before, but never seen him fight, and i certainly haven’t heard of Turbow.
It says a lot about both though that someone like Chuvalo would rank them up there with Big George.

Chuvalo on Foreman:
“When he hit me, my head went ‘Boing!’”
"Leon Spinks is so ugly that when a tear rolls down his face, it only gets halfway, then it rolls back up" - Muhammad Ali.
I believe that should read "Mel Turnbow"
Funny that Chuvalo names him as one of the hardest hitting he ever faced, yet Turnbow’s record is listed 9-13 (2).
I suppose it just goes to show that records can be decieving and hard punchers don’t always have great KO percentages.
Maybe Turnbow just didn’t land that often, but when he did……………
"Leon Spinks is so ugly that when a tear rolls down his face, it only gets halfway, then it rolls back up" - Muhammad Ali.
Turnbow was a sparring partner of Muhammad Ali.
There is an interesting piece about him in the Mark Kram book, “Ghosts of Manilla”.
This is what you get for paraphrasing Bert Sugar
I had heard that there were quite a few mistakes and typos in his book on an amazon review.
Chuvalo’s opponnent is listed as Joey, but it was in fact Mike DeJohn who Chuvalo faced at heavyweight, according to Boxrec.
Sugar had it as Turbo instead of Turnbow, and Joey instead of Mike.
"Leon Spinks is so ugly that when a tear rolls down his face, it only gets halfway, then it rolls back up" - Muhammad Ali.
He was turbo-charged

In 1973 at his prime ,“Candy Slim” Merritt had a record of 21-1, 16 KO’s. He stood 6 feet, 5 inches, and had broken the jaw of Earnie Shavers in sparring. He had dynamite in his hands and had the size to make some serious waves in the division. Hw as a rock and roller, but then got chilled by Henry Clark and that was that.

yes, hide could punch in his prime. his problem (or one of them) was that he was a small heavyweight who also fought at cruiser.
He could bang a bit at either weight, but only up to a certain level.
Vitali demolished him, as did “Big Daddy” Bowe.

prime Cotto's Left hook to the body
So it wasn’t always a fight ending punch but it sure was a game changer. Ive always loved seeing people go down from a body shot over a big blow upstairs. In a way i feel rolling around on the floor in pain is just as humiliating as having ur lights turned off.
Some that haven’t been mentioned (I think)
Kostya Tszyu (the Judah fight was lovely to watch, and rewatch….)
The Carl Dilks KO from before he fought Degale if I remember right, it was frightening. The guy was out for about 8minutes
Haye at cruiser had great power. What he did to Enzo was scary, and there were no flies on Mormeck either
Danny Williams had some decent pop too, his uppercut KO of Mark Potter was great, and he only had one arm at the time too.
Hasim Rahman basically only had one big punch in him, had no other skills really.
Tommy Morrison (vs Razor Ruddock was a great one)
Ray Mercer (did to Tommy what Tommy did to Razor)
Edwin Valero (the guy just had nasty, nasty power)
Antonio Pitalua
John Mugabi (against anyone but Hagler)
Archie Moore (sneaky old fella with deceptive power)
Rigondeaux (on recent form, he’s shown he can bang when he feels like it)
Yuriorkis Gamboa (Mtagwa has all the answers for JML, but not for Gamboa)
Kelly Pavlik (The Zertuche KO was a thing of beauty)
Chris Eubank (the Watson uppercut was the last of many)
Gerald McClellan (just plain vicious)
And the one I’m shocked no-one mentioned: the guy who made a career out of one punch: Antonio Tarver
