Abner Mares Returning April 21; Soto, Moreno, Linares Possible For Undercard

In the big news regarding Andre Berto's injury, one of the smaller stories slipping through the cracks is the news of a big card taking shape in Mexico on April 21. It already confirmed that Abner Mares will be fighting on the card. Other fighters on this card include Anselmo Moreno and Jorge Linares.

But the big news was the possible inclusion of a Humberto Soto against Lucas Matthysse bout on the card as well according to Miguel Rivera of Boxing Scene.

"Abner Mares will be fighting on April the 21st. We sat down with his team, this week. We are looking at potential opponents. It could be part of a tripleheader, with Anselmo Moreno also on it, and Jorge Linares," Richard Schaefer told BoxingScene.com.

Humberto Soto's co-promoter Antonio Lozada confirmed that Soto has been in negotiations with a couple of Golden Boy fighters since Soto is now in the Golden Boy stable. Two names that have been thrown around as potential opponents are Lucas Matthysse and Johan Perez.

Star-divide

I would love to see Lucas Matthysse get a run at Humberto Soto, and hopefully knock him out. Matthysse has gotten absolutely screwed in his two losses to Zab Judah and Devon Alexander. He is likely the best junior welterweight besides Timothy Bradley. I think Lucas beats Khan and he beats Peterson.

He outboxes Maidana quite easily too. Matthysse really needs another shot where he can get a fair shake. I know that taking on Soto in Mexico is going against stacked odds yet again, but Matthysse has the power to get Soto out of there. What do you guys think? Do you like Matthysse's odds against Soto if the fight is in Mexico? Will he get robbed yet again or can he KO Soto?

Well, it really depends on how Soto is looking these days. He hasn’s had a fight against a really competitive foe in quite a while.
Theoretically Soto does have experience dealing with agressive power fighters and at least at one point in the past his footwork was good enough. But these days, who knows what Soto looks like in a real fight….

yes, i would like to see lucas against soto, that would be a good fight… i think that perez right now is not rival for the zorrita, they aren’t in the same level right now, i like lucas for the fight, he is a good fighter, and for me that guy is still unbeaten, i hope if this fight happen, well lucas has to be more agressive and determinant, cause he will get robbed again if not…

The next time that stops Humberto Soto from taking a lousy fight, let me know.

I think Matthysse would be too big and too string for Soto, mid rounds stoppage.

ahahahaha

Guys, Soto isn’t going to fight Lucas Matthysse. He’s going to fight Perez.

This is like when Canelo’s team said last year “we could fight Cotto! or Mayorga! oralfonsogomez” and it was Alfonso Gomez.

Or like right now with Canelo’s team going “We could fight Cotto! Or Mayweather! Or Chavez! orshanemosley”

It’s going to be Mosley.

Mares will probably fight Vusi Malinga or some other dude. Moreno will fight some other dude sometime. Soto will fight Perez. Linares will fight someone who makes him feel better about himself.

I think Lucas loses to Soto. And it’s not cuz of the location. It’s cuz of the skills. Soto I think is just a better fighter. He fights the way he did against Urbano and he wins. By a bigger margin too, considering Lucas isn’t quite as active as Urbano is. Lucas is a good fighter. And while he certainly has a case in that he deserved the win in his 2 losses, I don’t consider them robberies. They were close fights in which he didn’t get the nod. And since Judah has been shot for awhile, really that fight had no buisness being close. Lucas should of got off to a quicker start and gotten him outta there

Me too. He’s a fabulous talent. I don’t know if he’ll ever quite “make it,” but he’s that rare guy who falls short while they’re endlessly praising his talent on TV, and you can really, really see the talent. I totally understand the fascination the HBO guys have with Linares. When he’s in control and on his game, he is as smooth and natural as they come. I love watching him.
