Vanes Martirosyan Wants to Replace Injured Berto Against Victor Ortiz

Vanes Martirosyan's latest challenge is just more talk. (Photo by Al Bello/Getty Images)

In a statement that pretty much amounts to nothing but I guess is notable in that it even exists, World Boxing News reports that Vanes Martirosyan says he's willing to go down to 147 pounds and replace Andre Berto against Victor Ortiz. Berto ruptured his bicep yesterday, and has pulled out of the February 11 rematch with Ortiz.

Martirosyan (31-0, 19 KO) is currently scheduled to face 41-year-old club fighter Troy Lowry on the Chavez vs Rubio undercard this Saturday in San Antonio.

Star-divide

The reason this amounts to nothing isn't that Martirosyan has a habit of taking lousy fights. It's more that there are two big factors here:

  1. Ortiz is Golden Boy, Martirosyan is Top Rank. So that counts it out anyway.
  2. Going to 147? Martirosyan couldn't even make a 156-pound catchweight in his last fight. He might be headed to 160 before he ever really does any damage at 154.

So you can pretty much just write this off as idle talk and another way for Martirosyan to keep his name out there. This isn't going to happen.

Even less chance of that happening than Paul Williams getting down to 147 for ‘a big fight’.

Nobody will read this and care and why should they?

The word wants should be in quotation marks for all of Vanes’ call-outs.

well he is good at keeping his name out there…I’d like to see just how good a boxer he is…silly me

Well if he fought someone “good at boxing” or “a legitimate contender” he might lose and never get the super fight he’s talked some much about wanting for the past few years.

lol well I guess that is one way to always keep your name out there as a “contender”…wins or losses don’t matter…just don’t fight anyone of importance!

Well at this point

It is pretty obvious his ceiling isn’t super high. He is promoted by Top Rank, and if they had complete faith in him he would have fought someone for a ‘title’ by now.
As it is I think he lost to Ouma and looked turrible against Joe Greene (who somehow looked more turrible).

I wonder why Top Rank is still promoting him… PP, please ask this question for me to your contacts (I’m actually curious for real)

At this point

I’d almost rather Vanes news just go unreported rather than even humor him or give him the pubicity.
