Manny Pacquiao Wants $28 Million To Fight Juan Manuel Marquez

This could be happening again. (Photo by Michael Loccisano/Getty Images)

In an interesting story out of the Philippine Star by Abac Cordero, Manny Pacquiao is demanding $28 million guaranteed to set up a forth fight with Juan Manuel Marquez. With this statement it seems that Marquez is the top of the heap for potential Pacquiao opponents especially with Arum going to the Philippines next week.

Now there could be a bunch of complications with trying to make this fight. Juan Manuel Marquez does not want to fight in Vegas because he feels that he gets screwed there. If Marquez is dead set on that position, then I don't see where Arum could get the kind of guarantee he needs for Manny Pacquiao.

Star-divide

In terms of cash, for the last fight Manny got $20 Million guaranteed and Marquez got only $5 Million guaranteed. Now these are just the guarantees, so they probably took home a little bit more than that figure. Also mentioned in the story is that Pacquiao is going to get $20 Million guaranteed no matter whom he fights according to Bob Arum. Arum also mentioned the names that we all thinking about, Lamont Peterson, Tim Bradley, and Miguel Cotto. Now I would like to see Pacquiao go after Tim Bradley because its an interesting clash of styles, but the Marquez fight is the most likely right now.

As sort of a side note, there was another story about Pacquiao being one of the most absent Congressmen. I have to wonder how many more fights Manny is going to have especially with his political ambitions. If he wants to get more power, then he is not going to be able to leave for long periods of time and train like he does currently. In light of that point I would assume that Pacquiao only has a couple more fights in him before he retires. That being said, what are the three Pacquiao fights that you want to see before he retires?

If it's just three, forget the names

I am interested in seeing him close his show at his entertaining best. So for me it would which styles and which fighters would make the best fights:

Rios

Bradley

As a fantasy wild card maybe Khan… or even Canelo

Note for those who have thought otherwise

Arum is doing his job and presenting metrics, analysis and opinion of the four fights under consideration

Manny, on the other hand, already knows and is the first and final word on who he fights and when.

Not the other way around

In other words Pacquiao is the one to blame for fighting Mosley and Clottey right? I doubt that. Manny is Arum’s puppet. He does whatever the string being pulled is design to do.

All of it. Gimmie, gimmie, gimmie. I want it all.

You are speaking nonsense

Popular but nonsense.

Manny is no puppet. Fighting Mosely was a business decision that netted him 20,000,000 plus dollars. I would call that genius.

Detractors or Manny and Arum both like to believe that Manny does only what Arum wants but they fail to know the reality. Arum creates valuable promotional opportunities. Manny chooses the ones he thinks are best.

Clottey was among the top legit welterweights when he fought and almost beat Cotto. Manny fighting him made sense and made him a small fortune.

Fighting Mosely was worth 20,000,000 (that’s twenty million dollars) plus a pice of the overage.
Doing so was smart business.

Think what you will but I can tell you Arum is prepared to get Manny what he wants…not the other way around. It may have been different when rum/TR was building him into a mega-star but I can assure you this demand in advance of Arum’s even traveling to the Philipines (a trip manny put off over Xmas) is an indication that he is going to be the one calling the shots .

Not the other way around which is obviously the way you want to continue to believe. Why, I have no idea.

Pacquiao didn’t need Mosley to make 20 million. So lets not go overboard with the genius talk. Pacquiao fought Mosley for one of the two reasons. Arum made him. Or Pacquiao decided he wanted an easy fight with a big pay. But he did not fight him cuz he thought of him as a threat. The man claims he fights for the people. That comment is either a straight out lie. Or Arum simply ignores him and does what he wants. Cuz I can tell you right now the people didn’t want Pacquiao-Mosley, Pacquiao-Clottey or Pacquiao-Margarito. But Arum did. Pacquiao is a great fighter. And looks to be a great person. But it’s not enough for some people. They always trying to make it seem like he’s more than he is. But to each there own. I will admit that trying to pass Manny as some great business man/negotiator did provide a nice chuckle

Who should he have fought exactly that would have made the people happy

He went up in weight and beat every top welterweight name in the business, willing to fight him.

He fought three of five welterweights that Floyd did not choose to meet and then he, like Floyd, beat Mosely. He fights to entertain and his style does so. He was mad at Mosely for stinking up the house. In fact, he was mad at himself for not pleasing his fans with adefinitive victory over Marquez despite his winning that fight.

The guy is a fighter. His resume is stacked. It includes historic HOF fighter at every step.
That did not happen by accident. It was a carefully mapped out strategy that Manny executed beautifully.

Your implication that Arum ‘controls’ him is nonsense. He promotes him. He created star opportunities/pronotions and Manny capatilized on virtually every one.

By the way, the people paid very well for Cotto, who you did not mention. they paid plenty for Margarito as well ….and they paid even more for Shane, who we all disparage, but sells.

The hardcore may have issues…as it does with every boxer, promoter and commission but that does not mean that Manny with all of his power is not very much a part of calling the shots as he sees them.

It wasn’t mentioned cuz it doesn’t apply. I myself wanted to see Pacquiao-Cotto. And while I’m sure Pacquiao makes his wishes known it don’t take a genius to know it’s not the only say.

Truce

My point is that he now has lots of power and lots to say about who he fights. Some of his Filpino friends/confidants want Bradley. Roach would like Peterson.

Lets see what Manny says after surveying his options. And who he chooses.

Roach would like Peterson.

Well it would be quite frankly the easiest of the four options and might give Freddie some weird revenge satisfaction.

He cant get it

It would be negotiation suicide.

If he asks that much, Manny move on and so would anybody not named Floyd or Manny

Why move until he sees if he can get his 28 million

He should stand firm and let marquez blink.

He is the A side fighter no matter which of these fights he choses so he gets to dictate the terms.

JMM will make more than in the last fight and thus garner his biggest payday ever fighting Manny a fourth time. If he wants that kind of retirement money, he will fight whatever the terms. And Manny’s team knows it.

While money is always a factor Marquez has made it pretty clear he has more than enough to retire on. From what was shown on 24-7 it’s pretty clear he wasn’t lying. Just cuz he’s knows Manny will get the bigger pay doesn’t mean he’s gonna let Manny dictate all the terms. They either gonna have to come out the pocket a lot more than they want to. Or they will go by some of Marquez’s terms. If not than the door is to the left. Like I said before money is always a factor. But with some fighters it’s not the only factor. Marquez is one of them fighters.

True. Juan Manuel has options and understandable issues. Moving on is one of them.

For Manny in this order...

Bradley, Floyd, and Marquez (in Mexico or Texas)… I would like to see what Arum has under his sleeves for this Spring, 10-1 I will probably be dissappointed. But these are the fights I personally would like to see.

by Clove_art on Jan 6, 2012 1:33 AM EST reply actions

1) Marquez
2) Mayweather
3) Rios/Ortiz/Maidana/Berto

(first two to secure his legacy, then one more fight for entertainment)

with all this money going to the main event..how much is left for the undercard..lets say its 28 mil for pac..10 plus for marquez..whats left for the undercard 1 mil? i guess we wont be seeing any sort of stacked undercard for this one if it happens
