Fights that should've happened that didn't

With all the will they, won't they of the Pacquiao-Mayweather negotiations, it got me to wondering of previous times when fights really should've happened but never got off the ground.

What fights would you have liked to have seen, that were just never made.

(I mean legit fights that could have potentially happened, not fantasy match ups ie Tyson vs Ali, etc.)

I couldn't find a thread that had discussed this recently, so apologies if I'm rehashing some tired debate.

I remember back in the day when I first got into boxing in the UK, Prince Naseem Hamed was the top dog, and a fight with Erik Morales was mooted but never happened after Marco Antonio Barrerra exploded the Naz myth.

Hagler-Leonard with both men at their peaks. No idea how it would have gone, but it would have been very different, and, I think, a little more emphatic/less controversial.

I feel your sentiment may describe Manny Floyd in a couple of years

Would the result have been different if the yhad fought sooner (Assuming they do eventually fight)

Bowe-Lewis. I’m just curious, and boxing would have been better off without that belt getting thrown in the garbage.

Marquez-Morales always coms to my head as a fight that should have happened, and they both were promoted by top rank in their primes.

Yes, most definitely.

One fight I would make happen if I could turn back and alter the the course of boxing time!

Mike Mccallum versus any of the big four( Duran, Hagler, Hearns, Leonard).

Speaking of Naseem, a fight with Gatti was mooted for quite a while and would have been very good.

Looking back when they retire, a lot of people will say that Klitschko/Klitschko should have happened.

I actually posted this after watching a clip on youtube of Gatti trying to talk up a Naseem fight. It would have been a crazy clash of styles.

Lewis/Vitali II
RJJ/Michaelczewski
Mayweather/Casamayor maybe (2002ish @ SFW?)

Tyson/Lewis but when they were both in their prime.

I would have equally loved to have choppy video of their sparring sessions when they were young. It’s said that Lewis had Tyson’s number at the time.

Hagler-Hearns II

Jack Dempsey-Jack Johnson

Dempsey wouldn’t ever fight a black person, made it a point to say so. His racism was part of his appeal.

Calzaghe v Benn would have been a corker too, if Joe had arrived say, three years earlier.

by Phill on Jan 7, 2012 12:36 PM EST reply actions

Yes, I think Calzaghe vs any number of American fighters he didn’t fight by remaining in the UK

by dmdm on Jan 9, 2012 5:46 AM EST up reply actions

Or even Froch Calzaghe, but that may have scuppered Frochies chances in the Super Duper Six.

I'm relatively young......

……but for me, I would’ve liked to have seen Naz/JMM. I would’ve like to how Marquez would’ve reacted to Naz and his unorthodox style. He might have even done better than MAB did. But who knows, either way, thats my pick.
