Luis Ramos Jr vs Raymundo Beltran: Live Results and Commentary for ShoBox
Tonight at 11 p.m. EST on Showtime (which is free this weekend for those of you who do not subscribe regularly), a lightweight double-header on ShoBox will hopefully help us learn more about three prospects.
In the main event, Luis Ramos Jr (20-0, 9 KO) meets tough veteran Raymundo Beltran (25-5, 17 KO) in the toughest fight of his young career. The co-feature will pit two 135-pound prospects, as Michael Perez (15-0-1, 9 KO) faces Omar Figueroa (13-0-1, 10 KO).
Ramos, 23, has been thus far the most-hyped of the bunch, and has turned his game up a notch since struggling in a fight last March, winning his last two fights very impressively. But the 30-year-old Beltran is no pushover, as Sharif Bogere learned last year in a bloody ShoBox brawl on May 13, so Ramos may have his hands more than full tonight.
ShoBox coverage will begin at 11, after the Friday Night Fights show on ESPN has finished. It's two shows for the price of one tonight, so join us and let's get 2012 rolling in the ring.

Man if I’m the only one watching this much better (on paper) show I’m gonna be bummed out by the lack of hardcoreness in our boxing fans.
But like most hardcore boxing fans you can all just pretend you watched it later. “Ah yeah I downloaded that shit”

Perez vs Figueroa Round 1

Perez throwing punches immediately. Figueroa doesn’t mind. So this is already better than the FNF main event. Figueroa with some HARD shots that sting Perez. They keep talking about Figueroa being dry, which he is, but he’s banging. Both are banging. Alright!
ALRIGHT!
Oh I expected this one to have action and it’s not disappointing me. These guys are throwing real leather. Figueroa switching constantly, which he loves doing. Perez targeting the body better, a bit more consistent in the first round. Figueroa letting his mouth piece dangle. Perez looks sharp, quick, and comfortable.
Good round.
Perez 10-9

Perez vs Figueroa Round 2

Man, Figueroa really does have some heavy hands. GODDAMN they are WINGING shots! Hard shots at that. Body shots from Perez. Straight left to body form Figueroa now. Sharp jab from Figueroa. For a guy who failed to make weight three times, he’s sure looking game. He clearly needs to move up in weight.
Nice jab from Figueroa again. GOOD uppercut from Perez, but Figueroa shakes it off and just moves back in. Jab and another sneaky uppercut from Perez. Golly, the body shots from both guys. I love this fight. I’m probably overselling it after FNF but this is my kind of scrap here. This is ShoBox at its best.
DIGGING to the body, both of them. Good right from Figueroa! Both staying close, and Figueroa ripping him with heavy shots late in the round.

Perez vs Figueroa Round 3

Perez continues with the good body work. He’s much more patient, not nearly as urgent as Figueroa, who might figure he has to get this early or not at all. He might not have the conditioning to last 10.
Perez tearing the body apart. These kids are really going hard in this one. This is what I mean — would you call this a Fight of the Year? Because compared to the FNF opener, it is, and everyone was like, “Wow that was a good fight!” and I was like, “Not really” and all that.
But that’s what I mean.
Figueroa with a counter left. Perez stung a bit. Figueroa opening up with some fast hands on the inside, and he pops Perez again late in the round. Perez might be feeling it. Figueroa is gaining confidence.
Perez 10-9

Perez vs Figueroa Round 4

Figueroa starting to take over in the first half of this round. His pace is getting to Perez. Damn I love this fight so far. I might have undersold it when I said I was overselling it.
Figueroa CRACKS Perez and Perez covers up! Now he’s throwing back, and they hunker down and trade shots. perez landing hard. Figueroa with a big left hook to the gut. That was NASTY.
BIG SHOTS FROM FIGUEROA IN COMBINATION! Perez getting wailed on against the ropes! But he’s avoiding shots with 10 seconds to go! BIG ROUND for Omar Figueroa!
Figueroa 10-9

Perez vs Figueroa Round 5

Oh doctor this is a good fight. Perez nails him with a good right. Figueroa is making a fan of me very quickly. Has good “skills,” has talent, and fights like hell at a high rate of speed. I don’t mean to make the comparison with a kid his age, but this is why I liked Barrera, Morales, Izzy Vazquez, Rafa Marquez — they combined great talent with the “warrior” stuff. That’s the perfect storm in my world. Mosley used to be like that.
Now they’re leaning up on one another. Perez is dog tired and gets rattled by a left hand. He’s warned for holding late in the round. Figueroa is going to be a fan favorite when he gets a bigger name. This is the kind of guy people love to watch.

Perez vs Figueroa Round 6

Perez definitely feeling those body shots and he’s holding again. Figueroa constantly chasing. Look, I’m not trying to insult Perez here. He’s fighting hard and fighting pretty well. He’s making this fight good, too. But Figueroa is hitting my Fighters to Watch list very quickly.
Perez boxing better this round. Perez working in close, but Figueroa thuds back on him again. Right hand from Perez. Figueroa with a left hook to the body. Figueroa trying to steal the round again and has Perez bent over and in some trouble. Perez’s body language sucks right now.

Ramos vs Beltran Round 1

Curt Menefee can’t tell what color Ramos’ trunks are.
First half of the round is a feeling out process, but unlike Davis-Lopez earlier, two guys are actually trying to fucking do something and learn what they can accomplish.
Beltran with a stiff right hand as he moves in. He looks Ramos’ equal in speed and just looks like a bigger man. But Farhood notes his usual downfall: He’s not throwing enough, and he’s got chances. I nick it to Beltran.

Ramos vs Beltran Round 3

Ramos coming in more now, and lands a right hook. He definitely needs to turn it up. Little uppercut inside as they tie up. Ramos letting his hands go more now, and that works. Right hook again. Beltran is open for that thing right now. Left to the body from Ramos, and then a good left upstairs catches Beltran, who’s looking a bit less comfortable now with the pace amped up.
Another headbutt from Beltran, and now Ramos is cut. That’s not good. Over the right eye. Doc taking a look.
Doctors tell referee to watch it, but the fight will continue.
Curt Menefee has had a horrible time with right/left all night.

Ramos vs Beltran Round 4

Beltran staying on top of him still, but Ramos has definitely gotten more aggressive and that’s the key thing for him. NICE combo from Beltran. Now he’s walking him down again. Ramos didn’t like that at all. But he pops him with a right, and Beltran uses that to open up. Beltran hates to lead, loves to butt.
Ramos looking uncomfortable. Left, but rights back from Ramos. Uppercut from Ramos, but Beltran just firing back and cracking him with both hands!

Ramos vs Beltran Round 5

STIFF left from Ramos to start the round on a counter shot. Ramos looking to capitalize on that. Ramos not a puncher but Beltran felt those. Ramos is pressing. Right hand from Ramos, and another left as he corners Beltran. Good stuff from Ramos.
ANOTHER headbutt from Beltran, right on the eye, and time is called again. Time in, fight continues. He’s not complaining much. Doc says “it’s the same.”
Counter left from Beltran. Ramos closes the round well.

Nice body shots from Ramos, and Beltran springs back with a left hook. Damn both guys throwing hard inside. This fight is getting better and better as it goes on. Ramos is really showing me something tonight, and Beltran remains arguably the absolute best prospect checker in the sport.

Ramos is just too tentative this round. I think he’s got a bit of a trigger issue here — freezing up a little bit. Beltran stalking but also not throwing. can be won in final minute.
Nice combo from Beltran, right and a left hook. He’s stalking and Ramos just is not throwing enough, and now holding with 15 seconds to go. Beltran gets the better of it closing the final slugfest, too.

A pretty big stretch
Only finding 3 rounds for Beltran, it’s obvious the two judges (one of which was Dr. Kim who had it a shut out for Paul Williams versus Kermit Cintron) were just giving Ramos the swing rounds. As expected, though no surprises.

Is realistic. For example, if you scored it Beltran 96-94 I think it’s reasonable to find 2 swing rounds for Ramos and the score flips the other way. Trying to find 3 swing rounds? It seems a bit of a stretch and giving them all to Ramos is obvious that Beltran wasn’t getting any favors.

of course he wasn’t getting favors. He was the B-side brought in to lose to the prospect. He should have landed more punches if he wanted to win, probably, or at least have a better argument. It sucks but it’s reality. Let’s change the world together.

Close fight, could have went either way. I just feel 97-93 Ramos is a bit too wide. But maybe I’m wrong, maybe I just have a soft spot for the old, underdog vet. I don’t know. Good fight either way, both fought hard and both deserved the nod. Too bad there wasn’t a WBC title on the line. That way Beltran could receive the WBC medal. :D Everybody wins.
