Antonin Decarie wants to fight Robert Guerrero next, makes the challenge

Edward Diller - DiBella Entertainment/Star Boxing

Antonin Decarie and promoter Lou DiBella want a matchup with Robert Guerrero next, following Decarie's win this weekend on HBO Boxing After Dark.

Coming off of a surprisingly dominant six-round TKO win over Alex Perez, Quebec welterweight Antonin Decarie is hoping to land a big fight next, and he and Lou DiBella are calling out WBC interim titlist Robert Guerrero.

DiBella has options on Decarie after Saturday's win, and would like to get a bigger fight for the 29-year-old technician, whose pure boxing ability was just way too much prospect Perez, who was exposed at Foxwoods on HBO Boxing After Dark.

"The welterweight division is a stacked division, so fighting anybody would be an honor. I just won the NABF title. I already own the WBC international, so my ranking at the WBC should be great. Robert Guerrero has a title in that [organization], so that would be great."

Decarie (27-1, 8 KO) was impressive against Perez on Saturday, but Guerrero (30-1-1, 18 KO) would likely be a step too far for him just yet. Of course he and DiBella want the fight, though - it's really about as good as they're going to get, and Guerrero might not have many more viable options himself.

For as much as Golden Boy talks up Guerrero, and as good as Guerrero's team is about staying in the press, and as much as he's a quality fighter, he's not a draw, he's not a star, and he doesn't seem to have any notable fights that could be made for the rest of 2012. All of Golden Boy's guys are tied up, and unless Guerrero gets that fight with Timothy Bradley on 12/15 (which sounds highly unlikely, whoever is to blame), who's he going to fight?

That said, if the WBC does as expected sooner than later and names Guerrero full welterweight champion with Floyd Mayweather having not defended that belt since winning it from Victor Ortiz, Guerrero could have a lot more by way of challenges flying in, and bigger names than Decarie will want to fight.

As a placeholder, though, and to keep Guerrero active, I don't think it's that bad a fight. I wouldn't expect Decarie to win, but Guerrero was nip-and-tuck with Selcuk Aydin. Crazier things have happened.
