Super featherweight prospect Saul Rodriguez of Los Angeles got the first blemish to his pro record, but it's really no blemish at all. The 19-year-old went to a technical draw with Cesar Garcia in the opening fight of the Donaire-Nishioka card Home Depot Center in Carson, California, when the fight was stopped due to cuts caused by accidental headbutts.
Rodriguez (6-0-1, 5 KO) and Garcia (2-5-2, 1 KO) were having a good little scrap before it ended after three of four scheduled rounds, when referee Pat Russell was advised by the doctor that the cuts on Garcia were too bad to continue. Under California rules, that means the fight is a technical draw, not a no-contest.
Our live coverage of Donaire-Nishioka will continue with all the undercard fights, as well as the main bouts on HBO, including Rios-Alvarado. Keep track with the StoryStream, or join us right now for undercard discussion.
