Russian featherweight prospect Evgeny Gradovich stayed unbeaten tonight, defeating Mexican veteran Jose Angel Beranza over eight rounds. Official scores were 79-73, 79-73, and 80-72.
Gradovich (14-0, 7 KO), nicknamed "The Russian Mexican," was able to control the tempo throughout the fight, but Beranza (35-25-2, 27 KO) didn't make life easy in there, and continually went after Gradovich, making him work for the win.
The 26-year-old Gradovich, who now lives in North Carolina, was pretty impressive in the fight, much as he was earlier this year against Frankie Leal, though that was more one-sided and also more exciting.
This fight concludes the off-TV undercard for tonight's HBO Boxing After Dark show, and now we're just minutes away from one of the most highly-anticipated fight cards of the year. Leading us off at 10 pm will be Brandon Rios vs Mike Alvarado, followed by the main event between Nonito Donaire and Toshiaki Nishioka.
