Veteran Derry Mathews was the superior man in the Prizefighter quarterfinal this afternoon against Jamie Spence, but chances seem pretty good that he won't be able to move on, suffering cuts near both eyes.
Mathews (31-7-1, 16 KO) won the fight 30-27 on all three judges' scorecards, but Spence (10-4, 2 KO) may take his place in the semifinals anyway. After the fight, Mathews rushed backstage to try to get some attention to the cuts, but he seemed to understand after the final bell of the bout that he most likely would not be able to fight again tonight.
It's a shame, as Mathews is a tough veteran, and the favorite for the tournament, and he outboxed and outfought a tough kid in Jamie Spence in a spirited first bout of the tournament.
Up next, Liam Patrick Walsh (10-1, 3 KO) faces Terry Flannigan (15-0, 4 KO). Join our live coverage and discussion here!
