The much-hyped Prizefighter lightweight tournaments panned out in terms of action and drama, but while the tournament's press coverage was based around veterans Anthony Crolla, Gary Sykes, and Derry Mathews, it was Manchester southpaw Terry Flannigan who came out on top, and cashed in on the £32,000 prize.

Flannigan (18-0, 4 KO) defeated Sykes (22-3, 5 KO) by split decision in the tournament final, winning on scores of 29-28 twice, and losing the third card by the same tally. It was a debatable, hard-fought, close fight, and gave the Liverpool finds something to cheer about in the end, though many will argue that Sykes deserved the win.

That said, Sykes was also considered lucky to get through the quarterfinal against Tommy Coyle, so it's all just sort of how it turns out in Prizefighter: You just never really know who will hoist the trophy at the end of the night.

Flannigan defeated Liam Patrick Walsh, Mathews, and Sykes to win the tournament. He had odds of 8/1 coming in, and while that certainly didn't make him the biggest underdog, he definitely wasn't considered to be on par with the three big favorites, and was also given longer odds than Tommy Coyle. It's an upset all the way, and a promising "new" start to his career, putting him in the mix domestically at lightweight.
