Fight Hub TV caught up with Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach, who says he asks his fighters to abstain from sex for ten days before a fight.
Fight Hub TV: "How do you deal with fighters and girls, and them having sex with their girlfriends and stuff like that? What's your view on that? Do you think it takes something out of a fighter?"
Freddie Roach: "I think mentally it might, yeah. I've had doctors give me results on tests. It does lower your testosterone level for a 24 to 48 hour period. It's been proven. Some people say it's not the sex, it's the chase. It's going out looking for that, unless you have a wife at home you don't have to chase. Fight Hub TV: "Ten days? That's a long time, man!"
Freddie Roach: "Ten days. No, come on. I was six weeks."
Fight Hub TV: "You? Six weeks?"
Freddie Roach: "My dad, he trained me. Yeah. It's changed a lot since then. But, you know, give me ten days just for the discipline and the mental outlook on it."
Fight Hub TV: "So for the most part, do they react like, 'OK,' or are they more like, 'I dunno, Freddie...'"
Freddie Roach: "I asked Michael Moorer for ten days, he says, 'I'll give you 14.' That's what he told me. You know, the thing is, if you talk to them in that manner, a deal's a deal, like, you know? Like, if I told somebody, don't do this. You can't tell a grown man what to do. I've found that out. But the thing is, it's just a mental issue, I think. But medically speaking, it can lower your testosterone level for a 24 to 48 hour period. So..."
