Gary Russell Jr headlines tonight's ShoBox: The New Generation, as the 2008 Olympian faces Roberto Castaneda in a featherweight bout, topping the bill from the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California, featuring the pro debuts of five members of the 2012 U.S. Olympic men's boxing team.
Russell (20-0, 12 KO) is basically taking a sideways step with tonight's fight against Castaneda (20-2-1, 15 KO), who was stopped in six by Christopher Martin in his last fight. But Russell is an emerging fan favorite due to his natural skills, most notably his blazing speed. It likely won't be long until Russell is looking at a serious fight at 126 pounds, and at 24, he's coming up on time to put these sort of fights behind him.
Debuting fighters on tonight's card are heavyweight Dominic Breazeale; light heavyweight Marcus Browne; middleweight Terrell Gausha; welterweight Errol Spence; and flyweight Rau'Shee Warren. All are matched up in four-round fights that will mostly serve as showcases for the fighters, all signed with Al Haymon.
The show will go live on Showtime at 10 pm EST. BLH will be here with live updates and commentary throughout the show.
