Both Broner and Guerrero are new entries into Ring Magazine's top 10 pound for pound rankings this week. Forgetting that it makes no sense that they'd be new on the list this week as opposed to last (when they actually fought), this is a whole new level of bad. In the past, we've crtiticized the Ring rankings because, while they took input from a large number of people, the rankings were actually determined by only a few and sometimes seemed to be arbitrary.
Here's the question I'm trying to figure out - who in their right mind would have Adrien Broner ahead of Nonito Donaire? Much less several of the supposed top writers in the sport? Other people's opinions may differ, but in my mind there are at least four wins that Donaire has that are better than Broner's best win, and he's won titles in 4 weight classes as opposed to 2. While Broner seems to be a fine fighter, I personally wouldn't have him ahead of any of the other nine guys in their top 10, and there are a few others I would still place ahead of him as well who aren't on the list (such as Yuriorkis Gamboa, this weekend's shaky performance notwithstanding).
For a long time, people accused Ring of losing their journalistic integrity when they were bought out by Golden Boy, who officially promotes Guerrero and unofficially promotes Broner. I'm finally starting to believe it.
