Amir Khan: 'We've had tougher guys in sparring than Carlos Molina'

Amir Khan spoke with Marcos Villegas about his upcoming fight with Carlos Molina, what he's learned under Virgil Hunter, and his reaction to Manny Pacquiao's KO loss to Juan Manuel Marquez.

Marcos Villegas, The Boxing Channel: "Amir, you have this fight with Carlos Molina. Do you see yourself in a position where your back's against the wall, seeing that you're coming off two back-to-back losses, and everybody's wanting you to have a spectacular and impressive win over your opponent?"

Amir Khan: "Yeah, definitely. The pressure's on a little bit. I'm always under pressure no matter what fight I've gone into. It's good pressure. It's only pressure that makes me train hard and work hard. It's only motivating me. I know what to do. I know what mistakes I've made in the past, and I know not to make those mistakes again. Going into this fight, I'm confident, because I've trained very, very hard. Being a fighter who people have been saying all sorts about, and having the last two fights as losses, I've come back stronger. I'm training twice as hard, and I'm more focused than ever. Having a coach like Virgil has only made me a more serious fighter. We're going to be ready for whatever Molina brings to the ring."

Marcos Villegas, The Boxing Channel: "He plans on pushing the pace against you. He told me that he wants to rough you up and get you out of what you've learned from Virgil, and get you back to how you were when you were with Freddie."

Amir Khan: "It's not gonna happen. We've had tougher guys in sparring than Molina. We've had some great sparring, great work. The things are going to happen. We know what to do, we know what we're up against. We do respect Molina, I've seen his fights before, but it's not going to happen. It's going to be an Amir Khan night."

Marcos Villegas, The Boxing Channel: "Tell me how your training's changed with Virgil. What has that whole process been like?"

Amir Khan: "(With Freddie) it's not understanding a game plan. Instead of (Virgil) giving you a game plan, he's made me understand it, so I know the reasons why to follow the game plan. Throwing shots and then knowing where you're standing. Also he's helped me on my balance a lot. My balance was really bad. I had great foot work, but my balance was not good. I've worked on my balance where every time I throw a shot, and the shot finishes, we know what position we're in. We're in a position to fight again, and if we move again, we're in position to fight again. It's all about being in a good position with Virgil. He's got me to learn the positioning, and when I do throw a shot, where I am after the shot, where the hands are, where the defense is. We worked on the defense. Because we know the offense is always gonna be there. That's in the blood. But we worked on the defense and being a smarter fighter."

Marcos Villegas, The Boxing Channel: "Is it just second nature to you now?"

Amir Khan: "Definitely. We've been doing it day-in, day-out, so I've got so used to it now that it's become something that's stuck to me."

Marcos Villegas, The Boxing Channel: "What did you see in that knockout of Manny Pacquiao? What would you say to Manny, and where does Manny go from here in your opinion?"

Amir Khan: "Manny's a great fighter, he's achieved everything in the game of boxing. My heart sunk when that happened. He's a great fighter and he's helped me a lot in my career. I think all he has to do now is maybe take some time off. Relax, take his time, and he'll know himself if he wants to come back. I don't think he has to prove anything. We know he's a better fighter. He just got caught with a good shot. Manny's a smart fighter, he'll know what to do next."
