Tonight's Friday Night Fights was another show that could be generously described as "unexciting," as the main event featured a totally one-sided main event, with one fighter not looking like he was totally over a recent hand injury.
Mike Dallas Jr stopped his losing streak at two fights, winning easily tonight over Miguel Gonzalez via unanimous decision. In a sloppy, clinch-filled fight, Dallas won on scores of 100-90, 100-90, and 100-89. Bad Left Hook scored it 100-90 for Dallas.
Dallas improves to 18-2-1 (7 KO), while Gonzalez drops to 20-3 (15 KO) with a clunker performance in a pretty big opportunity.
But as overmatched as Gonzalez appeared tonight, Dallas is not without legitimate credit tonight. He appeared to have made some legitimate strides in this fight compared to his pair of ESPN losses last year to Mauricio Herrera and Josesito Lopez. With time in the gym training with Virgil Hunter, Dallas looked more physically imposing than he used to, targeting the body nicely and wearing down his opponent over the 10-round distance.
Dallas is hardly ready for a leap up to the top ranks right now, but he's back on the right track at least. He's dropped a lot of bad habits, didn't leave himself as wide open as he used to, and showed commitment to his attack. His lead rights landed at will in much of the fight, and he was just too physical for the opponent.
Gonzalez just didn't have it tonight -- whether that was mostly due to injury or just partly due to injury is another story, but he was never really in this fight.
In tonight's co-feature, an overweight Shawn Estrada impressed no one with an eight-round decision win over club fighter Terrance Woods.
